Why Does My Baby Always Cry At The Breast?

If you read my birth story post, then you already know that I had a lot of misconceptions as a first-time mom. Breastfeeding was one of them.

Today, I want to share some of those breastfeeding struggles with you, then I would like to dive right in and share all of my gatherings as to WHY my baby used to always fuss and cry at the breast.

If your baby frequently cries at the breast, I hope this post can help. I sure do know the struggles of breastfeeding, so I am sending you all of the positive vibes.

My far-from-blissful breastfeeding beginnings

Breastfeeding was an inferno for me up until about week 6.

The first complication I had was right after my unexpected C-section when I found it nearly impossible to feed my infant while attached to multiple machines.

Secondly, my milk supply didn’t come in until day FIVE!

Due to my lack of breastmilk, Lennox was a screaming terror the whole five days in the hospital which was only the beginning of his sensitive-sleeping habits.

Home after five days in the hospital, I was about to give up.

I remember sobbing hysterically when Lennox wouldn’t nurse, nor sleep, so I gave in and made an 8-ounce bottle of formula ( I obviously had no idea what the hell I was doing). He took two sips, nearly choked on the milk flow from the size-two nipple (I know, shake your head) and then he passed out!

For the first time in day I got two hours of peace (well except for the fact that I was running around cleaning up aimlessly for the heard of visitors that were about to start popping in).

I hit my drawing point, ten days after Lennox was born, when all of the sudden nursing started to feel as if someone were shooting daggers at my breasts.

WTF? I knew my nipples were supposed to crack and get dry, but this was a pain coming from the back of my breast. It made me feel nauseous and irritated. I had Thrush, go figure.

On top of it all these breastfeeding struggles, not to mention, the daily monotony of feeding, pumping, cleaning, Lennox always fussed at my breast. I would say 6 out of the 12 daily feeds, he would flail around at my breast.

I remember everyone looking at me as if I had NO idea what in the world I was doing, and they were right I didn’t! That would frustrate me even more so, I would give up and give him a bottle of breastmilk hoping that would send him straight off into dreamland. Not the case at all.

It wasn’t until Lennox turned two-months-old that I had a lightbulb moment. Well, it really wasn’t a light bulb moment, but rather a; I calmed down and read the book: On Becoming Babywise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep by Robert Bucknam M.D.

I know, you’re probably over there like ‘WTF, you were talking about breastfeeding, and now you’re talking about nighttime sleep.’ Not exactly nighttime sleep, per se, but sleep in general.

Sleep was my number one issue with why Lennox was fussing at my breast. Keep reading to know more about the two main reasons my baby is fussing at the breast.

Why my baby cries at the breast: tired and overstimulated

My son, Lennox, was an awful sleeper, much like a lot of newborns.

However, I have come to the theory (and this might not always be the case but don’t hold me on my word), that babies become crappy sleepers because the parents are not aiding their baby to be a better sleeper. Not saying the parents are doing anything wrong, it’s merely a lack of information.

For example, after having Lennox, many of my friends and family members saw me struggling with Lennox’s sleep.

Here are three examples of a few of the many suggestions I received and tried.

Keep your baby up during the day; he will sleep better at night.
He’s hungry; he needs to eat more.
Feed him formula; it will help him sleep longer stretches.

Pardon my rant, but I will come back to the breastfeeding in one second!! I kept Lennox up during the day. I believe one day Lennox was awake for six hours straight!!!!!! He thanked me by staying up all damn night. This advice does NOT work people!!!!

Next, I tried feeding him more. Every time he would fuss, I shoved my boob in his mouth. I mean they’re supposed to feed on demand, right? Nope, he wasn’t interested. He kicked and screamed bloody murder until I fueled him up with an extra two ounces of expressed breastmilk and he would fall asleep, only to wake up 5 minutes later spitting up his whole day’s food.

Lastly, I tried formula before naps/bed, and I received the same results from when I overfed him with expressed milk.

Rant aside, my conclusion here is that your baby is fussing at the breast most likely because he’s TIRED!!!!! He wants to go the fuck to sleep but isn’t quite sure how to do that yet. That’s where On Becoming Babywise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep changed my life. Not only did Robert Bucknam show me how long a baby’s wake time should be, but he taught me the secret of Eat, Play, Sleep.

Did you know that a newborn baby should not be awake longer than 45 minutes to an hour????

That seemed bizarre to me, but it’s the truth.

Once I realized this, I would feed Lennox as soon as he would wake, before even changing his diaper. Feeding a newborn takes a while. For Lennox it took approximately 15 minutes.

That’s 15 out of 45 minutes of your newborn’s wake time!!!!!

After I would feed him, I changed him and played with him (tummy time, leg exercises, walk around, etc.). Then guess what? It nap/bedtime again.

To this day I swear by wake times and Lennox at 22 months still doesn’t get more than 6 hours of wake time. If he does, I plan for a night of no sleep!

Doing this routine stopped Lennox from fussing at the breast because when he would feed upon waking he would actually be hungry. It also helped from overfeeding him and contributing to reason # 2, infant reflux.

Furthermore, Lennox’s naps started becoming more prolonged and profound. Eat, play, sleep was a godsend for us, and will be for all those babies who aren’t born the with the fantastic gift of snoozing the day away.

Why my baby cries at the breast: Infant Reflux

Lennox suffered from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Looking back on Lennox’s newborn life, I wonder if me overfeeding him contributed to his reflux.

As an adult, I know that when I overeat, I feel incredibly uncomfortable and get miserable heartburn, making it difficult to sleep, or get into a comfortable position.

Establishing an eat, play, sleep routine helped Lennox tremendously because it allowed Lennox to digest his food properly before going to sleep.

Tiredness/overstimulation and reflux were Lennox’s two principle frustrations and when he was frustrated he gave off cues of being hungry. In all reality, he needed to sleep, or needed to soothe by sucking on his pacifier.

It will take some time to get to know your baby and understand his real signals, but if you think your baby is overstimulated or is experiencing reflux, try the eat, play, sleep method, it can do wonders.

Overstimulation and reflux were Lennox’s reasons for fussing at the breast. However, they might not be the reasons your baby is fussing at the breast. Wendy Wisner of Milk on Tap offers a comprehensive list of why your baby might be fussing/screaming at the breast. Some of which are:

I love this quote because I remember how panicked and frustrated I got when Lennox would fuss at my breast.

After doing a little research and trying to find out why exactly why Lennox wasn’t happy during his feedings, I found out that he was way too overstimulated, which I interpreted for hunger, causing me to overfeed him, putting him in discomfort from reflux.

Boy, was it a vicious cycle.

Hopefully, if you’re reading this, your baby is a fantastic nurser and sleeper,. If not, I hope my tips can help you out because I know very well how frustrating it is not only trying to breastfeed a newborn, but then dealing with a battlefield at the breast.

Mosaic Heart Chalk Activity for Preschoolers

The warm weather has made its appearance. All the mamas and papas are doing the summer scramble to find outdoor activities that are fun and educational for kids!

Last year during the pandemic, I tried this outdoor mosaic chalk heart activity with Lennox, and let me tell you, it was an absolute hit!

Not only did his tiny three-year-old fingers enjoy getting some fine motor action by using the scissors to cut the tape. He also enjoyed exerting all of his endless energy coloring in all of the shapes!

It entertained him for a good hour or so, and for me, that is a mom win!

Thus, if you are looking for a fun outdoor activity to do with your toddler, preschooler, or school-aged child this summer, look no more. Below I will provide a tutorial on making this fun and educational DIY mosaic heart sidewalk chalk activity for kids!

Materials you will need:

Sidewalk Chalk
Masking Tape

Step 1: Get outdoors and outline your mosaic chalk heart

I wanted more of a geometric and simple shaped heart, so this step requires three steps.

Take two equal lengths of tape (mine were about 24 inches each) and form a V.
Then, take two 12 inch pieces of tape and place them at about a 100-degree angle to form the top part of the heart.
Lastly, take two 8 inch pieces of tape and form the center of the point of the heart.

Step 2: Make the lines for the mosaic chalk heart

I allowed Lennox to assist me with this part to work his fine-motor hand skills. He would peel the tape and pull. Then, I would cut the pieces and add them randomly to the heart. He was fascinated by the tape-working process.

Step 3: Have your toddler color the mosaic chalk heart

Before we started filling in the heart, Lennox and I looked at the colors and named each one. Since we had two boxes of chalk, we sorted them by color.

Then I let Lennox decide where he wanted to place each color and helped him fill in the shapes.

I don’t know about you, but I love coloring and doing crafts. There is something incredibly calming about it, especially during these crazy times we are living.

Lennox had a blast, and I could see his gross and fine motor work in harmony as he meticulously colored the shapes.

Below is what our heart looked like before we removed the masking tape. Lennox kept insisting on painting over every color with green. Even though it bothered my perfectionist soul, I did not impede upon his creativity.

Step 4: Have your toddler execute their fine motor skills by removing the tape.

Next, I let Lennox execute his fine-motor skills once again by using his pincer grasp to peel up the masking tape.

He was amazed by the outcome!

Again, this activity was super easy to set up, it was educational and stimulating for Lennox, and it created so joyful decoration to our sidewalk.

5 Tips for Raising Bilingual Children Using The Time and Place Approach

In this post, guest blogger Corrie Wiik, from Mama Llama Linguist, will share five tips on how she uses the Time & Place bilingual parenting approach at home with her two children.

I’m Corrie, a former Spanish high school teacher, turned Spanish blogger and content marketer at Mama Llama Linguist.

Like Lorena, I’m a non-native Spanish speaker raising bilingual kids in a little cottage in San Diego, CA. We are calling it our Spanglish dream!

My passion for the Spanish language truly blossomed over a decade ago when I got to spend a year teaching in Seville, Spain. The culture, the food, the people, the language- I was totally hooked.

My children are aged 5 and 3, and I always knew I wanted them to experience the joy of bilingualism, too.

My husband (also a non-native Spanish speaker) and I are now three full years into our bilingual parenting journey… so if you did the quick math, you will notice we didn’t start at birth with our first.

I wish we had, but I spent most of that first year of motherhood in a fog and trying to survive! So, establishing a language plan just wasn’t on my radar!

Then when I did commit (when he turned 2 and my daughter was born), and I was much more comfortable and adjusted to mom-life, I made many many mistakes and almost….almost gave up.

My why was strong though and I am so relieved we pushed through because, 3 years on, we are finally seeing the fruits of the labor!

Our Family Language Plan:

Early on, I realized that my toddler was very much a passive bilingual- meaning he understood when I spoke to him in Spanish, but would respond only in English.

Code mixing (mixing the languages) occasionally happened later- which I would count as a win since he was using at least some Spanish!

That was when I realized we needed a family language plan and strategy if we were going to have long term success with our children becoming active bilinguals.

If you are raising a bilingual child, you may know that there are a number of different strategies to navigate language use in and outside the home. They are called Family Language Policies.

In summary, these are MLAH (Minority Language at Home), OPOL (One Parent One Language) and Time & Place.

It’s the latter that my family embraced in the second year of raising little linguists and that I have the honor of sharing with you today here on Bilingual Beginnings.

How We are Raising Bilingual Children using Time and Place:

Time and Place is essentially choosing to speak English at home, but using Spanish (the minority language) strategically at specific times of day and in certain places.

This strategy is often heavily rooted in routines, language learning materials and external input.

Here are just a few of the ways we raise bilingual children using Time and Place:

Time and Place Tip 1: Car rides

Tally up your minutes running errands and getting to and from preschool etc. each week, and you will be surprised how much of our time is spent in a car.

We now take advantage of this sedentary time to listen to Spanish Nursery Rhymes on Spotify or tune into our absolute favorite podcast Eat Your Spanish.

Time and Place Tip 2: Read Alouds

We read in Spanish every single day. I could share a whole post with you on the power of reading aloud to your children!

I am a huge literacy advocate and our bookshelves are overflowing but that is truly our happy place.

For toddlers and preschoolers it’s important to select books that are beautifully illustrated to engage our listeners, and repetitive in nature.

One of our favorite series is the Toca Toca collection from Usborne Books & More.

Poetry and nursery rhymes are also wonderful options for language acquisition.

Time and Place Tip 3: Spanish Activities

We weave in ‘Spanish Hour’ to our routine (usually early afternoon). This includes Finger Plays, Puppetry, and dipping into our Spanish Homeschool Curriculums. I share a round-up of our top picks here.

Time and Place Tip 4: Native Speaker Exposure

Finding opportunities to engage with native speakers allows our child to put their language learning into context. It also gives it meaning- something that they need especially in the early years.

My children attend a Spanish immersion preschool 3 mornings a week. This is target language input outside the home and allows them to experience listening to native Spanish speakers.

I realize this is not always available, or affordable for every family. Fortunately, there are many online options now for more affordable Preschool Spanish Immersion classes. My top picks being Bilinguitos and Spanish Playdates.

5. Screen Time

We leverage screen time as much as possible by using Spanish apps like Gus on the Go and Spanish School Bus.

Apps require the child to engage and respond. This is much better than simply watching a TV show in Spanish as they are actively participating in the experience.

The Time & Place strategy works really well for my family because my husband and I are both non-native speakers. We tried OPOL for a time (with me speaking Spanish and my husband speaking English) but it was too intense for us.

You have to consider your family’s language goals, your relationships and choose the language plan that will work best.

So, you can see there are many awesome tools and strategies out there for raising a bilingual child even as a non-native speaker!

Whether you are fluent in the minority language or a beginner yourself, you CAN raise a bilingual child!

The secret is establishing a language plan with internal and external input, gathering the best resources and staying consistent!

9 Outdoor Language Learning Ideas for Bilingual Kids

Summer has almost arrived, and it is the perfect time to take language learning outdoors! In this post, I will offer 9 outdoor language learning ideas for bilingual kids.

As a bilingual teacher and mom of three young children, I’m always looking for fun and simple ways to integrate Spanish learning into our daily routine. This summer we’ll be taking advantage of family time outdoors in nature – and weaving in new Spanish vocabulary as we make memories together.

Language learning isn’t just about the quantity of language input our kids receive – it’s also about the quality of the language interaction.

Our kids need to be engaged in real-life, meaningful, and high interest activities in the minority language. Creating enjoyable moments using our target language should be a top priority as we raise bilingual kids.

The good news is we can build in quality, playful experiences in easy ways! As Adam Beck says in his book “Maximize Your Child’s Bilingual Ability,” “It’s vital to maintain a strong sense of humor and playfulness – particularly through the younger years – so that your children will come to feel positivity toward the minority language and be willing, even eager, to make this long journey with you.”

Today I’m sharing with you my favorite 9 outdoor language learning ideas for kids. So you and your family can prioritize Spanish learning as well! I hope you’ll utilize these ideas to get outside, have fun, and nurture a love of Spanish language learning in your kids.

1. Explore a theme

As you naturally plan exciting outdoor adventures, take time to explore a theme around where you’re going or what you’re doing.

If you’re going to the farmer’s market this weekend, read some fun books about produce, farming, or markets around the world. Before a trip to the zoo, head to the library to find interesting nonfiction texts about animals.

When you’re heading to visit a relative in a new city, introduce your child to vocabulary words related to that city that they don’t know yet. The key is utilizing a fun family outing for intentionally teaching your child new themed Spanish vocabulary!

In her book “Bilingual By Choice,” parenting expert Virginie Raguenaud encourages us to “keep speaking the language daily – during fun and varied activities and outings to broaden our children’s vocabulary.”

2. Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt in the minority language

Outdoor scavenger hunts are always a big hit with my kids! And this idea can be used multiple times this summer! As you go on a walk around your neighborhood or explore a local park or nature center, choose a focus for a scavenger hunt.

Get creative to challenge your kids with whatever Spanish learning goal is right for them – whether it’s colors and shapes vocabulary or insect names. Your scavenger hunt might be for items in a rainbow of colors one day, ten different types of leaves another day, or fifteen different creatures the next time.

3. Make an outdoor nature journal in the minority language

With a simple notebook, your child can enjoy creating a nature journal this summer! It can be a resource all summer long for art and literacy activities in Spanish. Take the nature journal outside for some observation and note taking.

One day, your child might like to do some birdwatching and sketch the unique birds they see. You might even check out a book about local birds from your library to name them all – don’t forget to learn their Spanish names together as well! How about drawing animals they see, describing treasures they collect, or writing about a gemstone collection?

4. Integrate science

Science learning will come naturally as you explore in nature. To maximize science fun, think about your child’s interests and what would be most appealing for them. Would they like to study rocks and minerals, find out how to compost, or learn about summer weather patterns?

Pick a science topic and go for it! How about a flower study? You might gather different types of flowers to name, sort and describe with colors, shapes, and sizes vocabulary. Your child could draw or glue them in the nature journal, press them into flower bookmarks, or use them for crayon rubbings.

5. Make an outdoor language obstacle course

Every summer, my kids and I create dozens of obstacle courses in our yard and on the sidewalk. You can too! Take some chalk and draw a course on the sidewalk. Don’t forget to label the verbs in Spanish!

You might draw lily pads for kids to jump on, then a bridge to cross, and a flat ladder they have to climb. My oldest loves to use his rollerblades, so I’ll make zigzags for him to follow, and lines for jumps.

In the backyard, give simple Spanish instructions for the obstacle course (or let your kids design it). “Circle around the tree, then run to the fence, hop all the way to the garden boxes, and finally crawl underneath the swings.”

6. Use family vacation time

If your family takes a vacation this summer, use it for Spanish language learning! Before the trip, pick out a book or two from the library about the place you’re going to learn some key Spanish vocabulary. On the way there, your child could take advantage of car time for a Spanish game, audiobook, or podcast. And don’t forget about enjoying catchy Spanish music on the trip!

When you’re there, whether you can use Spanish the entire trip or not (my husband doesn’t speak Spanish!), you can choose a time or activity to prioritize Spanish. This could be as simple as choosing an outing – like a morning at the beach – to use Spanish. Think of all the beach-themed language learning you could do with your child!

Or it could be using Spanish as you seek out unique cultural resources at your vacation destination (a restaurant, museum, market, or cultural neighborhood…). Truly, one of the best things about raising bilingual kids is the opportunity to cultivate awareness and appreciation of different cultures!

7. Plan a picnic

Make your picnic time Spanish language learning time! A picnic is an excellent opportunity to learn new food and cooking vocabulary. Involve your child in planning, picking out ingredients, making the picnic food, and assembling it all in a bag or basket for your outing. Discover some new books about food and cooking around the world.

Enjoy the meal speaking the minority language together, talking about the foods you’re eating, and your beautiful outdoor surroundings. If you can take your picnic to a local park, give your kids some playground time and review some park-related vocabulary.

8. Take reading and writing outside

Choose an easy activity – take story time outside! Grab a picnic blanket and a stack of books to read to your little one outside on a beautiful day. Or encourage your child to do their own reading and writing outside in a shady spot in the backyard. Find helpful reading resources and a free summer reading bucket list here.

Take out a favorite book to read – add a stuffed animal and a beach towel for extra fun. They can grab a notebook to write a story, poem, or list of all the sights and sounds around them. Or, they can use a sketchpad to draw a picture of something that catches their eye outside!

9. Create outdoor language learning memories

As Naomi Steiner, M.D., & Susan L. Hayes say in their book “7 Steps to Raising a Bilingual Child,” “Kids learn better and retain more of what they learn when they’re interested and engaged. So when it comes to kids and language input, the attractiveness of the activities is every bit as important as the sheer number of them.”

Summer is the perfect time to weave minority language learning into exciting outdoor family adventures! And it’s especially significant if you can capitalize on your child’s interests this summer as you plan in – or spontaneously create – quality learning opportunities!

Are you raising a bilingual child in Spanish?

If so, you have come to the right place because here at Bilingual Beginnings, we offer bilingual parenting tips and free educational resources to supplement your child’s Spanish at home or in the school setting.

I am raising my almost-four-year-old son, Lennox, in my nonnative language Spanish, using the Minority Language at Home bilingual parenting approach.

Even though I consider myself fluent in Spanish, I have encountered many obstacles over the years trying to keep the minority language strong at home. One of which was not having the proper materials.

Thus, I started searching and searching for the best resources to supplement Spanish at home with Lennox, and that search inspired me to start this blog and share my tips with you all!

Well, today, I want to share a list of the best bilingual toys in Spanish to reinforce the minority language in your home.

The best toys to encourage language use are open-ended toys

First, I want to say that I am the biggest advocate of learning languages through play.

The interactive Spanish bilingual toys that I will mention below are great supplements for language acquisition. They introduce new vocabulary words to babies and toddlers, as well as provide entertainment.

However, I recommend not filling your house with these toys because they are “one and done toys.” One and done toys are considered the toys that light up and sing. Your child will explore all the toy’s features and sounds until exhaustion, and then once they have, they might never pick it up again. This is the case in my household, at least.

But I am not completely writing off all of these toys (obviously not, because i’m writing this post) because they can be resourceful for parents who do not speak Spanish and want to expose their kids to the Spanish language. It’s also a great way for parents to learn Spanish along with their child.

In my personal opinion and from experience, I have seen language flourish among children who are playing with open-ended toys like the ones listed in this post or simply with loose parts play.

Interactive Bilingual Spanish Toys

Last year, I did a guest blog post with LeapFrog titled “Encouraging Bilingual Beginnings in Young Children.” In return, I received a bundle of the LeapFrog bilingual products, and I can honestly say that I was super impressed.

Out of all of the toys Lennox received, his absolute favorites are the LeapFrog Learning books. Lennox received two the LeapFrog Learning Friends 100 words book and the 100 Animals book.

Let me say that, for starters, I was dumbfounded by the technology of these books. The touch quality is impressive. The pages are super skinny and feature different images and vocabulary on both sides of each page. Somehow, the slightest touch generates a word, sound, or music, depending on the three settings of the book.

Also, the vocabulary is extensive. I even learned new words!

I was mind blown, and Lennox too!

He loved to hear all of the words and sounds, and by the end of each read/exploration of the book, he would start DJing the different sounds!

These books also have a handle, so your toddler can carry it with them wherever they go!
