What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness means being present in the actual moment. Being aware of the space around you, what’s happening, what you’re doing, what you’re thinking and how you’re feeling. 

According to Mindful.org, mindfulness is defined as “the basic human ability to be full present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.”

Mindfulness is a practice. A ritual of stopping everything that you are doing and checking in with yourself and your surroundings.

The more mindfulness is practiced, the more it seeps into your everyday life allowing you to worry less and enjoy more. It is an act of getting to know ourselves. An act of prioritizing our needs. An act of self care.

Why is mindfulness important?

In today’s society, where “busyness” is the height of productivity and success, and where we are surrounded by screens that stimulate our every doing,  we have lost touch with the ability to feel, to be human, to enjoy.

Take this quote from Eckhart Tolle to put mindfulness into perspective: “In today’s rush, we all think too much — seek too much — want too much — and forget about the joy of just being.” 

Being able to stop what you are doing and center yourself around your thoughts will help you better get to know yourself as well as calm anxiety and stress. It will bring clarity to your life and help your see what is bringing joy to your life versus what is causing you to worry. It is a step towards healing open wounds.

Teaching our children mindfulness from an early age will help them be more resistant to developing those wounds. Practicing mindfulness around and with our children has many benefits. Let’s check them out.

Benefits of Mindfulness for Kids

Children are little sponges. They soak up everything their environment offers them. 

If you are chaotic and anxiety-ridden, there’s a probability that your child will be too.

But if you can practice mindfulness around and with your children, then they will become more mindful as well.

How to practice mindfulness with children

You can practice mindfulness with your children in many ways. 

• Practice mindfulness meditation. From an early age, encourage your children to sit and meditate with you. Even if it’s only for one or two minutes. There are many guided meditation resources available on YouTube for adults and children!
• Focus on breathing. Sit with your child and teach them different breathing techniques.Take a deep breath in for three, hold for three, breathe out for three. Breathe in for four, breathe out for four.  Practicing breathing is a tool that they can use in their everyday lives to calm stress, nerves, fear and sadness. 
• Practice yoga with your children. Exposing your children to yoga at a young age will increase your child’s awareness of the connection between mind and body. 
• Get into nature. Go on a nature walk and encourage your child to listen to all of the nature sounds around. Nature gets us away from distractions and into a stress-free environment.

• Connect with your child. Turn off all screens and simply connect and talk with your child about what’s going on in their little worlds.

Last night, my son and I were watching the new Halloween movie on Netflix, “The Curse of Bridge Hallow” and I can’t stop thinking about a quote that the father in the movie said when his daughter asked him why he never learned how to ride a bike. I originally created this Spanish alphabet printable for my son to use at home because he struggles with letters. He doesn’t like to sit still for long periods of time to learn letters and gets frustrated with worksheets.

That’s why I try to create engaging activities and games, like an ABC bingo to help him practice letters and make them stick.

This visual Spanish alphabet printable has encouraged his letter memorization as he connects the letter to the animal words that begin with each letter.

First, let’s learn a little bit more about the Spanish alphabet and this printable below.

The Spanish Alphabet

The Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, that’s one more letter than the letters of the English alphabet, thanks to the ñ.

Now you might be wondering, “what about ch, and ll, I definitely learned those in Spanish 101?”

Well, yes, you might have, but the Real Academia Española declared that ch and ll are no longer part of the Spanish alphabet because in all reality, they are actually digraphs, two letters that combine together to correspond to one sound.

Therefore, the current Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters.

Why Valentine’s Day quotes for sons in Spanish?

I have a son that I love to the moon and back. A son that came into my life and changed it forever.

Since having him, I have grown so much as a mother and as a person and I will be forever grateful that he came into my life.

I remind him how much I love him on the daily, but I would like to start a special tradition of writing him a special message each Valentine’s Day.

I will write the messages in our minority language, Spanish, and place them in a box.

When he is an adult, I will hand over the box to him. (I do this with his letters to Santa, too.)

This way, whenever he is out on his own in life and he feels like he needs a little amor de mamá, he can open up the box and pick out one of the following quotes.

Why watch Christmas YouTube videos in Spanish?

In our bilingual household, we try to keep screen time to a minimum, but when we do use screen time we put it in our minority language, Spanish.

With all of the streaming devices nowadays, it makes keeping screen time in Spanish super easy. 

Disney, Netflix, Hulu, and almost every device have an option to change the audio to Spanish, or any other language, as well as add subtitles.

And if you don’t have those applications, then you can also resort to YouTube which is free and has a plethora of Spanish videos for children. We watch a lot of our seasonal shows and videos on YouTube.

Today, I am going to share some of our favorite Spanish Christmas videos on YouTube with you in the hopes of getting you in the Christmas spirit and maybe you can learn some more Spanish as a family as well!

Spanish Christmas Villancicos YouTube videos for kids

To start this collection of Spanish Christmas YouTube videos, I will begin with some popular and traditional villancicos or Christmas carols.

Play these videos, learn their tunes and add these Christmas songs in Spanish to your next Christmas playlist!

Then, in the following section, I will add some more Spanish Christmas Youtube videos that the kiddos will enjoy!

“Rodolfo el reno” 

Below are two fun videos of the popular Christmas carol “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, or in Spanish, “Rodolfo el reno”!

This first video is by Mundo Canticuentos, a Colombian YouTube channel that produces engaging content for children.

This second video of Rodolfo el reno is by the Spanish YouTube channel Peque Música.

“Hoy es Navidad”

This next video is titled “Hoy es Navidad”, but you might also find this similar tune titled “Cascabel, Cascabel”, “Navidad, Navidad” or “Jingle Bells.”

This video is by the Mexican YouTube channel ChiquitinesTV

Here is another version of “Jingle Bells” in Spanish by Argentine Channel Plim Plim.

I love this original take of the “Jingle Bells” by my absolute favorite YouTube Spanish Channel, El Reino Infantil.

This song is called “Todos juntos estaremos” (we will all be together) with lyrics about a farm family spending Christmas together! How sweet and entertaining for the littles.

“Los peces en el río” is a traditional Christmas song in Spanish. The video below is by Mundo Canticuentos.

“Que Linda La Navidad”

Also by Plim Plim, Argentinian YouTube channel, we have an original Christmas carol with a sticky tune.

“Mi burrito sabanero”

“Mi burrito sabanero” is a traditional Christmas villancico about a little donkey making his way to Bethlehem. This video is by the Mexican YouTube channel HeyKids

“Santa Claus llegó a la ciudad”

“Santa Claus llegó a la ciudad” also known as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The video is by ChiquitinesTV.

“Feliz Navidad a Todos”

“Feliz Navidad a Todos” is the Spanish version of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” produced by El Reino Infantil.

“Campana sobre campana”

This villancico is a traditional Andalusian song and one of the most famous Spanish Christmas carols. In this song, heavenly angels ring the bells of Bethlehem, inviting all to join with the Shepherds to see Christ, child, in the manger.

What is a scavenger hunt?

A scavenger hunt is a fun, interactive activity that is educational, too! They consist of a list of items usually centered around the same theme, and the point of the game is to find all or as many items on the list as possible.

The game can go as long as you want, or you can set a time limit for how long the game should last. It’s up to you!

Scavenger hunts are great for preschool and elementary-aged children. They promote new vocabulary use and encourage movement to find the items.

On this list there are some scavenger hunt ideas for older kids, too.

Another great thing about scavenger hunts is that they can be used indoors and outdoors. If the weather is nice, you can do a fun outdoor scavenger hunt. If it’s a rainy day or too cold, try an indoor scavenger hunt!

I use scavenger hunts often in our bilingual home. They are an easy way to learn new Spanish vocabulary and for encourage minority language use at home. They are also so much fun!

The free printable scavenger hunts that I offer on my blog come in both English and Spanish. They are great for the classroom and the home.

Since we love scavenger hunts so much, I decided to do a round-up post of a range of different scavenger hunt themes starting with my favorite, a gratitude scavenger hunt to remind us all of things for which we need to be thankful.

That said, browse through this list of scavenger hunts and see if you find one that will suit your child’s liking. There are some great indoor scavenger hunt ideas as well as outdoor fun ideas from which to choose. Happy browsing!

List of scavenger hunt lists ideas for kids

• I’m going to start this list of scavenger hunts off with this gratitude scavenger hunt. This is a fun way to teach children about gratitude, something not easy to do given the self-centered nature of kids. This is an activity you can do multiple times throughout any season of the year!
• Ready to get those listening ears ready? Print out this sounds of nature scavenger hunt (available in Spanish) and go on a nature walk with your littles. Explore new areas of your neighborhood. Find a spot far from manmade sounds such as cars, tractors, electronics etc. Find a spot to sit down and listen for the items listed on the sounds of nature scavenger hunt. So fun!

• Here’s is a fun and free neighborhood scavenger hunt get the kids outside, walking around the neighborhood. Exercise and fun, all in one. Some words that you can find on this scavenger hunt are: Fire hydrant, trash can, dog, and lots more words that can be found in your neighborhood.
• For another neighborhood activity, try this outdoor scavenger hunt with outdoor chalk. Have your littles draw items around the neighborhood and have all the kids find the items on the list!

While you have your chalk out, try this relaxing mosaic heart chalk activity. A mindful activity for all kids!

• On your next trip to the playground, print out this playground scavenger hunt and have your littles search for different playground equipment such as the slide, the monkey bars or the zip line. Young kids will love this hunt!
• For more outdoorsy fun, try this outdoor scavenger hunt that includes clue cards with easy, rhyming riddles to solve.
• For your next camping trip, take along this interactive camping scavenger hunt to encourage your children to discover nature and learn the names of all the camping gear.

• Before you head to the zoo, print out this zoo scavenger hunt and see if your kids can check off every animal on the list as they walk throughout the zoo.

Then, learn about the zoo in Spanish with this selection of zoo animal books in Spanish, or these zoo animal printables for preschoolers in Spanish!

• Headed to the library, or have a TON of books at home? Here is a fun book scavenger hunt that is perfect for elementary-aged kids. Some items on this scavenger hunt are: a book with an animal on the cover, a history book, a dictionary and more!
• Celebrating a birthday? Why not make it fun with this birthday scavenger hunt for kids and adults! Hide gifts where the scavenger hunt clues lead and have your child figure out the clues to find their gifts!
• If your sweet girl loves her princesses, try out this princess scavenger hunt. Hide princess items around the house, or even in your backyard and have your darling look for all of the princess items, such as tiara, high heels, ribbons and more. So dazzling!
• For more magic, try this fairy scavenger hunt to find fairy objects such as moss, mushrooms and feathers.
• Practicing the colors with your preschoolers? This color scavenger hunt will make for a fun activity to get the kiddos outdoors looking for different colors.

• Looking for a hands-on geology activity for middle schoolers? This Geoscavenger Hunt might be right up your alley. It is a hunt for products that derive from rocks, minerals and other resources in Earth’s crust. Cool, huh?
• Bring the fun indoors with this fun indoor scavenger hunt that will have the kids in giggles as they search all over for a household item such as: something large, something soft, something square, etc.
• Learning rhymes is an important part of developing literacy skills. Play this fun rhyming scavenger hunt with your elementary-aged kids to help them brainstorm and figure out the rhyming items in the game. This is a great hunt for younger kids.

• A printer

Below are some ways you can use the flashcards outside of this spring bingo game in Spanish

• Create a print rich environment by placing these around the house. Add adhesive magnets to the back of the laminated flashcards and hang them on your fridge or washer.
• Print out multiple sets and work on sequences and patterns with your preschoolers!
• One of my favorite activities is to print off two sets and use them as a memory game. This activity is perfect for younger children to practice language development and memorization skills to connect the spoken word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it!
• You could also play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. First, shuffle the flashcards. Then, lift a flashcard and show your child. Lastly, if they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
• Play What’s Missing. Pick a handful of flashcards to your child. Talk about the flashcards and lay them flat on the table. Then, take a scarf and place them over the cards and remove a card. Have your child guess which card is missing.
• You could play a bilingual game and say the version in English. Have your child repeat it in Spanish and vice versa.
• You could place the flashcards face up on a table and see how fast your child can recognize the word.
• Play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct card.
• Lastly, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child match the words and images with their correct halves.

You will also receive 10 Bingo Suertudo playing game cards to go along with the vocabulary cards. Each of the cards comes with a free space This means that you can play with up to 10 players in each game!

In each of my previous Bingos I have used a fun bilingual name name to go along with the bingo game.—Bingo enamorado, Bingo Navideño, Bingo Suertudo and my winter bingo game, Bingo Invernal.

This bingo is called Bingo en flor ( Bingo in Bloom) to go along with the blooming spring season!

Once you print off your Spring bingo cards and bingo mats, I recommend laminating them so you can save them for future use!

Then, cut out the laminated cards.

Once the spring vocabulary cards are cut out, place the cards face down in a pile or in random order.

Give each player a bingo sheet.

Then in order (youngest to oldest/ clockwise/ however you choose) pick up a card from the pile. Have the person picking up the card say what card they have in Spanish.

Lastly, all players with the selected vocabulary card on their bingo sheet, should mark it with a bingo chip.

The first player to fill their card wins!

Tips to get maximum language use from this Spring Bingo in Spanish!

• To make sure you get the absolute most language use out of this Bingo game, state the rule that the class or your family is only allowed to speak in Spanish!
• If the child flips a card and does not know the word of the image on the card, help them out with the pronunciation. Even better, before the game, flip the the cards and review the words!

Then, you can ask questions or say phrases such as:

“¿Quién tiene el ____? “

“¡Solamente mamá tiene la ______!”

“¡Wau, todos temos los ___!”

¡Qué suertudo, tu tienes el arcoiris!

Repeating phrases like this to include the vocabulary word with help the new Spanish vocabulary stick!

• Allow your child sufficient time to process the card that has been chosen, and to identify the object on their card. Try not to interject or speed up their finding process. Doing so might confuse the child or discourage participation.

1. Plant Seedlings

Gardening is one of my favorite things, so naturally, I will start this list off with a gardening activity, planting seedlings.

This is a great activity to start indoors, right before spring. Your child will love watching your seedling evolve from a tiny seed into a tasty vegetable or herb or a beautiful flower.

We start our seedlings in these peat pots and keep them under a grow light for the first few weeks. After that, I cover them with some plastic to get a greenhouse effect.

What’s cool about these peat pots is that when the warm weather arrives, they can be directly transplanted outside, in the pot itself, to ensure stronger plants!

2. Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt

Scavenger hunts are so great, especially to learn about the fun qualities spring brings!

It is a fun activity, but it is also a great learning tool!

I have a FREE spring scavenger hunt that you can print out here after subscribing! It is in English, but it is also in Spanish if you desire to learn a little Spanish this spring!

3. Climb a Tree

Is there a more exciting activity than climbing a tree? I remember my childhood years trying to weave in and out of intricate branches pretending I was a monkey. Or was that just me?

I know allowing your child to climb a tree might seem risky, but did you know that risky play has many benefits?

According to Playground Professionals, risky play has 8 science-backed benefits. Check them out below:

Risky play increases:

1. Risk assessment skills
2. Emotional regulation
3. Self-esteem
4. Taking-initiative
5. Problem-solving and creativity
6. Physical development
7. The ability to deal with failure

That said, get climbing and get risky!

4. Play with loose parts outdoors

Have you heard about loose parts or the benefits of loose parts play? If not, read up on my introduction of loose parts play here.

Then, once you know a little more, take the 21 outdoor loose parts activities and GET OUTSIDE!

5. Make a mosaic heart out with sidewalk chalk

Who doesn’t love sidewalk chalk on a nice, sunny day?

I know I do!

It is just a great activity to calm the soul and practice mindfulness while getting some vitamin D!

6. Play frisbee

Playing an outdoor game of frisbee is a fun gross motor activity that will encourage hand-eye coordination. I always love a good game of frisbee! Especially when you get the whole family involved!

7. Make a sensory bin

If you have a toddler or two, make a fun sensory bin to keep them entertained for a few hours outdoors! There are lots of fun ways to play with sensory bins.

Two springs ago, we did this fun construction zone sensory bin made out of beans with Lennox. He played with it for a week straight during quarantine, outdoors!

Little did we know that he was also partaking in a gardening activity because a few weeks later, we had bean sprouts growing in our yard!

8. Weed your garden beds

Have your littles get involved with outdoor gardening. Show them how to pull the weeds by the root!

It is a fun activity and energy buster with your garden looking the best on the block!

9. Go on a walk and explore new parts of your neighborhood

You never know what you might find. Be it a small creek, a painted rock, or a new park. You never know!

10. Paint rocks

Looking for a sensory activity that will calm the mind? Bring out the acrylic paints and paint some rocks!

Then, when you’re done, go and hide them in the community for someone else to find.

If you didn’t already know it, there are many rock painting and hiding communities on Facebook where people paint intricate rocks and hide them for others to find. After someone finds the rock, they take a picture and post it in the group for the artist to see.

How fun is that?

I promise you it will encourage you to get outdoors and walk!

11. Make and paint your own planter

I am absolutely obsessed with these DIY Monster planters by The Inspiration Edit.

What a great way to recycle and reuse 2-liter soda bottles and turn them into a beautiful home for your flowers or seedlings!

I will most definitely be doing this activity with Lennox as soon as possible!

12. Go on a nature walk

13. Go to a creek or river

Go explore a river or creek near your home! Soak in all of the vitamin D and beauty around you.

14. Skip rocks

While at a creek or river, skip some rocks with the family.

15. Make a rock toss game

You could also create a target and see who can aim and hit the target first or the most.

When we go to the river, we often find a distant sign and make a competitive game out of who can hit the sign the most.

16. Go on a sounds of nature scavenger hunt

While on a nature walk, print out this sounds of nature scavenger hunt.

Use listening skills to spot different sounds that you can hear.

17. Fly a kite or make your own kite!

We love to make kites in our family. So one day, I will allocate time to make a DIY tutorial on how Carlos’ makes these awesome kites that fly super high.

Fun fact: Carlos (my hubby), who is from El Salvador, used to make kites as a child. The children of his community used to get together and “fight” their kites.

What does this mean? They would fly their kites high in the sky and try to interfere with the path of someone else’s flight by getting it tangled up or getting it stuck in a tree. How fun, right?

18. Take a walk in the rain

Making a bird feeder is so easy to do.

Find a pinecone, apply peanut butter to it, then roll in in birdseed Voilá!

To avoid the mess, you could simply purchase a bird feeder. It makes for a super fun activity for the family to bird-watch in the morning!

21. Birdwatch

Sticking with the topics of birds. Sit outside for a bit and see how many different types of birds you can find!

22. Do an animal washing station

Nothing entertains young kiddos more than some animal figurines and some soap. Of course, they will enjoy this activity even more when they get their animal figurines all dirty and have to give them a much-needed bath.

23. Learn about animals in Spanish

Taking a trip to a farm, or maybe going on a walk in the forest, you can learn a ton of new Spanish vocabulary with the following printables in Spanish for children!

If you are a plant lover like me, visit a local nursery and pick out some new indoor or outdoor plants! Then, let your children pick out one too!

28. Aerate your lawn

Spring is the perfect time to aerate your lawn. It is also a toddler favorite! Bring out the aerator and let your child poke holes in the ground so that your grass can grow deeper roots!

29. Mulch your flower garden

Get the kiddos involved to help you mulch your garden! If they love getting dirty, this is the perfect activity.

30. Go on a family picnic

Pack up your favorite sandwich and fruits and enjoy the fresh air for a bit!

31. Have a garden tea party

Sit around your freshly planted and mulched garden with a cup of tea and some treats.

32. Make a fairy house

This is on my list of to-dos still! I plan to make our fairy garden out of popsicle sticks, real sticks, and stones. Stay tuned.

33. Search for four-leaf clovers

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, get the kiddos out and search for their luck through a god old four-leaf clover hunt.

35. Cut the grass, literally

Hand your toddler a pair of safety scissors and let them cut away at the grass. This will improve their fine-motor skills and they will have so much fun.

Find a leaf outside and do a leaf imprint art activity with your child.

Find flat rocks and see how many you can stack. Who will stack the most rocks?

39. Play Spring Bingo

40. Catch some tadpoles and watch them grow

If you find some tadpoles at a nearby river or creek, catch one or two and make them a tadpole habitat. Your child will love watching it grow.

Once it has grown, please place it back into its home in nature.

41. Do a spring STEM experiment OUTDOORS

You could do this Free the Figurine Ice melt activity on a warm day, which is great for toddlers.

Or, you could try this spring baking soda science activity for preschoolers using spring-themed cooking cutters. I can’t wait to try this fizzing experiment by Mombrite with Lennox later this spring!

42. Make some Blossom Fairy lights

If you are a fan of fairy lights like myself, try this blossom fairy lights activity by Red Ted Art made out of Egg Cartons!

Blow some bubbles, or make your own bubble wand and solution that will last all day long!

Young children will love the giant bubbles that this wand will make. It will also be wayyyy easier for them to use!

One of our favorite activities is to go on a walk and collect pretty flowers. We then place them inside of large books to dry them out. Later, we make fun crafts with them! They also make for good memories!

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get set in my ways and tend to only visit the same parks. So one of my favorite activities to get me out of my comfort zone is to Google new parks and make a trip to them!

O the past year I have become very interested in botany. I want to know what everything is nature is. To help me, I paid for a year subscription on the App, PictureThis. So now, when out on walks, when Lennox and I find something new, we take a picture of it and identify it. It’s so fun!

70. Make a stick raft

Last summer, Lennox and I made stick rafts and took them on our trips to the river. We had fun testing out how much weight our rafts could carry down the stream.

I want to make a tutorial soon on how we made ours, but here is a great stick raft tutorial by Be a Fun Mom for now.

This is a great activity for older kids .

71. Go on a nature shape hunt

Walk around nature and identify the different shapes you can find.

72. Likewise, go on a nature color hunt

Want colors can you find in nature? I bet you can find a lot!

73. Look for lichens, moss & mushrooms

Have a little educational activity and learn about lichens, moss, and mushrooms. Then go on a hunt for them!

74. Go on a family road trip during spring break

Don’t tell Lennox, but we are taking a family road trip for his birthday! Spring road trips are the best. It’s not too hot so you can roll with the window down!

These Easter eggs are toddler friendly and scrum-diddly-sumptuous! This can become one of your family fun easter traditions!
