There are so many benefits of doing word searches with your children. In her post “The Benefits of Wordsearches,” Lisa from Gifted Guru mentions the many benefits of using word search puzzles in your classroom.  

I want to list a few of those benefits below.

• Helps with word recognition

I enjoy making thematic word search printables because they aid children in word recognition. If they know the theme is winter, then that will help them tell the difference and learn to recognize new winter vocabulary in Spanish

• Develop pattern recognition

This is important with learning Spanish spelling and phonetics. It helps recognize which letters follow which.

• Introduce new vocabulary

This is super important when learning a foreign language. This is one of the reasons I plan to create a seasonal word search for every season. It helps children with building vocabulary in Spanish.

• Spelling

Spelling is slightly different in Spanish than English since Spanish is a phonetic language.

Word searches help the user discover the patterns of spelling in Spanish as they look for each word in the word search. 

• Word searches are fun

Naturally, the most important way to learn is through having fun and I don’t know about you, but I always enjoyed myself a good word search growing up.

In fact, I’ll share a quick story. The other day at the grocery store, I decided to buy a word search book, rather complicated I might say. I had been using it for a few days, when all of the sudden Lennox, my five-year-old son, took an interest in it.

He said, mami y papi, I can’t find this word. My partner, Carlos was quick to say, “It’s okay, Lennox, you don’t know how to play that anyways.”

I said, “bring it to me and let me see.”

Little did we know that he had found a whole two worded code word all by himself. We were absolutely in shock.

Our five-year-old, who could barely identify the whole alphabet yet by himself, was now finding two letter words in a word search. AMAZING!

This story proves that word searches are perfect AND fun for the young and old!
