What do you need for this free printable Spring scavenger hunt?

For this activity, all you need is:

• 8.5 x 11 printer paper or heavy cardstock paper.
• A printer

How To Play This Nature Sounds Scavenger Hunt in Spanish

Take this scavenger hunt on a nature walk with you. Explore new areas of your neighborhood.

Prepare your child for this activity by going on a listening walk by identifying all of the sounds that you hear.

Find a place that is quiet and far from manmade sounds such as cars, tractors, electronics, etc. You might be lucky enough to have this in your own backyard.

Find a spot to sit down, or stand. Go over the different items on the scavenger hunt. Talk about new vocabulary and the different ways to say different animals’ sounds. Mimic the sounds the animals make so that your child can put a sound to its vocabulary word.

Next, tell your child that for 5-10 minutes, depending on your child’s attention span, you are going to close your eyes and listen to all of the different types of sounds.

In Spanish, you could say,

“Vamos a cerrar los ojos por 10 minutos y escuchar todos los sonidos que nos rodean.”

Sit in silence for as long as your child permits, and then come to a discussion on the different sounds your child heard.

If they heard a sound on the nature sound scavenger hunt, check in the box next to the sound.

Compare and contrast the different sounds heard. Maybe you heard a different sound than your child.

A great way to get maximum language use out of this game is by keeping the game entirely in Spanish once you open up the floor for conversation.

According to a study done by Rachel Buxton et al., nature sounds can drastically improve mental and physical health.

Listening to sounds of nature can:

• Lower stress
• Reduce pain
• Improves cognitive performance
• And improves mood

This is why it is essential to get kids into nature as much as possible, away from artificial sounds.

The study states that sounds made by humans can interfere with the natural experience. It can cause stress and affect the mental and physical state.

If it’s impossible to eliminate artificial sounds, humans can still benefit from mixed noises, a mixture of artificial and natural sounds.

I recommend getting as far deep into nature as possible for this activity. But, if that is not possible, a mixture of natural and manmade sounds will work too. It might even promote more conversation!

Last year during the pandemic, I tried this outdoor mosaic chalk heart activity with Lennox, and let me tell you, it was an absolute hit!

Not only did his tiny three-year-old fingers enjoy getting some fine motor action by using the scissors to cut the tape. He also enjoyed exerting all of his endless energy coloring in all of the shapes!

It entertained him for a good hour or so, and for me, that is a mom win!

Thus, if you are looking for a fun outdoor activity to do with your toddler, preschooler, or school-aged child this summer, look no more. Below I will provide a tutorial on making this fun and educational DIY mosaic heart sidewalk chalk activity for kids!

Materials you will need: 

1. Sidewalk Chalk
2. Masking Tape

Step 1: Get outdoors and outline your mosaic chalk heart

I wanted more of a geometric and simple shaped heart, so this step requires three steps.

1. Take two equal lengths of tape (mine were about 24 inches each) and form a V. 
2. Then, take two 12 inch pieces of tape and place them at about a 100-degree angle to form the top part of the heart.
3. Lastly, take two 8 inch pieces of tape and form the center of the point of the heart.

Step 2: Make the lines for the mosaic chalk heart

I allowed Lennox to assist me with this part to work his fine-motor hand skills. He would peel the tape and pull. Then, I would cut the pieces and add them randomly to the heart. He was fascinated by the tape-working process.

Step 3: Have your toddler color the mosaic chalk heart

Before we started filling in the heart, Lennox and I looked at the colors and named each one. Since we had two boxes of chalk, we sorted them by color.

Then I let Lennox decide where he wanted to place each color and helped him fill in the shapes.

I don’t know about you, but I love coloring and doing crafts. There is something incredibly calming about it, especially during these crazy times we are living.

Lennox had a blast, and I could see his gross and fine motor work in harmony as he meticulously colored the shapes.

Below is what our heart looked like before we removed the masking tape. Lennox kept insisting on painting over every color with green. Even though it bothered my perfectionist soul, I did not impede upon his creativity.

Step 4: Have your toddler execute their fine motor skills by removing the tape.

Next, I let Lennox execute his fine-motor skills once again by using his pincer grasp to peel up the masking tape.

He was amazed by the outcome!

Again, this activity was super easy to set up, it was educational and stimulating for Lennox, and it created so joyful decoration to our sidewalk.

In our household, we try to keep toys to the minimum.

Today,  I have a fun, sensory, STEM water table activity to do with toddlers that I want to share with you.

It’s a Disney in Ice Escape activity that will allow your child to explore with different tools and help them break the Disney figurines out of the ice!

It is super easy and simple to set-up, so let’s get ready to jail break these Disney figurines!

What is a STEM activity?

A STEM activity involves science, technology, engineering, and math. 

According to Little Bins Little Hands Blog, 

“STEM makes creators, thinkers, problem solvers, doers, innovators, and inventors. Exposing kids to simple STEM ideas at an early age today sets a foundation for higher learning tomorrow.” 

In this activity, your toddler will learn the science of ice and how warm water will melt the ice. If you have an impatient toddler like myself, he will try lots of methods to break his Disney friends out of ice jail as quick as possible.

Materials needed for the disney in ice escape activity

• Water TableDisney Figurines

• This activity can be done with any figurines. I chose the smallest one so that I didn’t take up much room in my quarantine-filled freezer.
• Small containers to freeze your figurines in
  • In a similar activity, Little Bins Little Hands uses Balloons, which I think is a great idea. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any at the time.
• Eye Dropper
  • I couldn’t find Lennox’s liquid dropper from his fine-motor toolset. Therefore, I ended up using a Boogiebulb (clean, I promise, I had just boiled everything at the beginning of the quarantine)from when Lennox was a baby. It did quite the job.
• Water Blaster
• Measuring Cups

I set this activity up this morning before Lennox could see me because he would have been way too curious and try to impede my doings. 

I took the smallest of his Disney Figurines and put them in the storage containers and added water.

They took about 5 hours to fully freeze.

While he was napping, I submerged the containers in warm water for about a minute. Then, into a bowl, I pounded on the bottom of the containers with my palm to extract the iced-figurines. 

Since it was semi-nice outside, I thought I’d bring this activity to the backyard to avoid messes. I placed the ice in his water table along with a bow full of warm water and the Boogiebulb. 

 All that was missing was the toddler. 

How Lennox helped his Disney friends escape

First, we used boogiebulb. Lennox practiced his fine-motor skills while trying to figure out how to get water into the bulb. 

He did this for about five minutes until he got frustrated that his friends were still cold. 

Then, I brought out the water blaster, where he got some gross motor practice trying to get water into it. 

I added measuring cups to the mix, and Lennox enjoyed transferring the water in an easier-fashion to the ice cube. 

It was at this point in his discovery that Lennox’ had a lightbulb moment. He realized that the warm water removes the ice. So, to get more water onto the ice, he unplugged the drain to the water table, and let the water run over it.

Out popped Alvin! Lennox was in awe. You could see he was really proud of himself.

He did this with a few more ice cubes until he realized the ice was fragile enough to beat his friends out.

He was thrilled once they had all escaped.

It was an entertaining and educational STEM activity all in one that allowed Lennox to execute fine-motor, gross-motor, and sensory exploration all in one. 

Lennox really enjoyed this activity, and I hope to try it again soon by freezing the figurines in a balloon for an Easter-related escape. Stay-tuned.

Well, this sensory animal washing station activity that I am going to share with you today, was a fan favorite!

It is super easy to set up, super sensory, and super fun!

What you will need for this sensory animal washing station:

• Animal figurines
• Three bins or containers
• Water
• Soap
• Pouring cups (optional)
• Tongs (optional)
• Chalk (optional)
• Scrub brush (optional)

I was planning to use only farm animal figurines but decided to throw his dinosaur collection in as well. The more the merrier! You could do this with any figurine, or any water-proof open-ended toy!

To begin, I set up three bins outside: one empty bin, one filled with soap and water, and one with plain water.

I put the animals in some dirt to let them get a little dirty. I had chalk outside already, so Lennox and I drew on the animals as well to get them even dirtier.

Then, the fun part. Lennox has always been so intrigued when I wash the dishes, so I knew he would love this part.

I showed him how dirty an animal was, and how he can put it in the soapy water and use a scrub brush to clean the animal off.

Then, by pouring clean water all over the animal, we removed the soap studs. Lennox was so fascinated.

The fine motor muscles in his hands working by using the tongs, and the sensory play with the water and soap suds running through his hand.

As much fun as he is having playing with these random loose items, he is also learning. He is learning science through the water and soap suds.

Furthermore, he is gaining perception from the weight of the objects he is lifting and the movement of the water. He is learning about health, how to play independently, and communication through new words. 

Learning is always so much better through play.

What is a sensory bin?

A sensory box is a container filled with different, loose parts for play.

The container itself should be big enough to let your child explore the objects inside. Boxes are great because they come in all shapes and sizes.

Sensory bins help children learn about the world, all while using their senses.

What you will need for this construction zone sensory bin

• A Box or bin
• Beans. I used beans, and added some rice to fill up the box more. But you can use any loose parts that you can find; gravel, rocks, ice, beads, sand, dirt, etc.
• Construction vehicles

To avoid mess, I set up the bean box outside, but you can also set up this activity inside, it might just require a little more cleanup.

Then, I added all of the ingredients to the box and voila! Lennox played the day away!

Literally, the entire day. And the next, until I finally put the box away.

What’s cool about this activity is that you can easily store the beans and rice away into a container and bring them out again another day!

Also, if the beans get in your backyard, your toddler can have a little aftermath nature fun watching the beans sprouts 😀 Lennox really got a kick out of the growing beans!
