If so, in this post you can find a round up of 12 Cinco de Mayo printable activities for kids. Add these to your social studies lesson plans to teach your students more about this Mexican celebration.

I will start by sharing some fun Cinco de Mayo resources in Spanish for all of you wonderful Spanish teachers, dual language teachers and bilingual homeschoolers out there.

Then, I will continue with six more Cinco de Mayo printable options in English.

So, let’s get browsing through this list of 10 Cinco de Mayo printable activities for kids, but first, let me offer a brief history of Cinco de Mayo!!

BRIEF HISTORY OF CINCO DE MAYO

The Cinco de Mayo Mexican holiday is commonly mistaken as Mexico’s Independence Day, however, this is not the case.

Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Batalla de Puebla, which occurred on…. (can you guess the date?) May 5th 1862.

Let’s find out what this day is really about with a brief history below.

After two wars, the Mexican War (1846-48) and the Reform War (1858-61), the Mexican government was heavily in debt with Europe. To make matters worse, Mexican President at the time, Benito Juarez, delayed interest payments for two years.

Spain, Britain and France were eager to hold Mexico accountable for the war debt so they headed to Veracruz, Mexico in December 1972 to collect.

While Spain and Britain negotiated a settlement for the debt, French forces led by Charles de Lorencez continued to March on with 7,000 soldiers to Mexico City with the interest of overthrowing the Mexican government and installing a regime that would benefit French interests.

Mexican president Juarez ordered General Ignacio Zaragoza soldiers to stop the advancement near the state of Puebla with an outnumbered army totaling between 2-5,000 soldiers.

On the fifth of May, or Cinco de Mayo, French Lorencez gathered his army and began an attack from the north side of Puebla.

The battle lasted from daybreak to sunset and Lorencez realized his superior French forces were losing more troops than the Mexican troops who were utilizing their knowledge of the terrain to defeat the French forces. The French forces ended up fleeing the battle.

The victory of the Mexican army against the French troops over the years became to represent a symbol of Mexican resistance and today, Mexicans and Mexican Americans hold an annual celebration of the Battle of Puebla known as Cinco de Mayo.

The first knowledge of celebrating Cinco de Mayo here in the United States was in California in 1863.

In 2005, congress passed a resolution encouraging communities to recognize the historical significance of the holiday through learning a celebration of Mexican culture through food, drink, dance and music.

So, in honor of Cinco de Mayo, let’s celebrate this day with your students or children with some fun printable Cinco de Mayo activities.

What do you need for this Cinco de Mayo Bingo game in Spanish?

For this fun Cinco de Mayo bingo game pdf file, you will need:

8.5 x 11 printer paper or card stock
A printer
Bingo chips or something to mark bingo with such as pebbles, legos, or if you want to be festive, jelly beans!
A laminator and laminating sheets if you want to save this game and play it again another day!

Ways to use these free printable bingo cards outside of this bingo game

Create a print rich environment by placing these colorful cards around the house. Add adhesive magnets to the back of the laminated flashcards and hang them on your fridge or washer.
Print out multiple sets and work on sequences and patterns with your preschoolers!
One of my favorite activities is to print off two sets and use them as a memory game. This activity is perfect for younger children to practice language development and memorization skills to connect the spoken word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it! So much fun!
You could also play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. First, shuffle the flashcards. Then, lift a flashcard and show your child. Lastly, if they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
Play What’s Missing. Pick a handful of flashcards to your child. Talk about the flashcards and lay them flat on the table. Then, take a scarf and place them over the cards and remove a card. Have your child guess which card is missing.
You could play a bilingual game and say the version in English. Have your child repeat it in Spanish and vice versa.
You could place the flash cards face up on a table and see how fast your child can recognize the word. This is a great way to practice letter and word recognition.
Play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct card.
Lastly, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child match the words and images with their correct halves.

How to Play this Cinco de Mayo Party Game

Now that you have your game printed and cut out, you are ready to play this fun activity.

Use it for your Cinco de Mayo classroom celebrations, or use it at home and get the whole family involved.

You could even print it out and take it to the restaurant you are going to celebrate at to entertain the littles while you indulge in some adult fun! Woohoo!

Are you ready to have so much Cinco de Mayo fun?

Let’s play. Here’s how:

Give everyone a bingo card. This bingo game comes with 10 bingo sheets to use with up to ten players.
Then give every player a handful of bingo markers. You could also use items such as candy corn, coins, or small loose parts to mark your bingo game.
Let everyone mark their gratis free space.
Place all of the Cinco de Mayo bingo game cards in the middle of the floor, or to keep them from going all over the place, in a small bowl.
Have the first player randomly select one of the calling cards and announce it to the group. Players with that image can mark their card with their markers.
Take advantage of this opportunity to keep the game in Spanish. After a couple times of play and learning the Spanish vocabulary, get competitive. Playfully remove a player if they resort to using English.
Repeat the previous step until a player fills up their entire card. The first person to fill their card, wins!
Give the winner a small prize.
Play again!

Tips to get maximum language use from this Cinco de Mayo Bingo in Spanish!

To make sure you get the absolute most language use out of this bingo game, state the rule that the class or your family is only allowed to speak in Spanish!
If the child flips a card and does not know the word of the image on the card, help them out with the pronunciation. Even better, before the game, flip the cards and review the words!

Then, you can ask questions or say phrases such as:

“¿Quién tiene el ____? “

“¡Solamente mamá tiene la ______!”

“¡Wau, todos tenemos los ___!”

¡Qué suertudo, tu tienes la piñata!

Repeating phrases like this to include the vocabulary word will help the new Spanish vocabulary stick!

Allow your child sufficient time to process the card that has been chosen, and to identify the object on their card. Try not to interject or speed up their finding process. Doing so might confuse the child or discourage participation.

HISTORY OF CINCO DE MAYO

Before you work with these Cinco de Mayo themed color by number worksheets in Spanish, teach your children a little bit more about the history of Cinco de Mayo.

For starters, contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day. It actually celebrates the Battle of Puebla.

I have a brief history of Cinco de Mayo that you can check out here, and I will also leave some fun Youtube Videos below that you can share with your students.

Alright, now that you know a little bit more about Cinco de Mayo, let’s move onto what your children are going to learn with these worksheets.

CINCO DE MAYO COLOR BY NUMBER PRINTABLE WORKSHEETS: MATH

Bring these Cinco de Mayo color by number worksheets in Spanish into your preschool, pre-K or Kindergarten classrooms and get your students working on number recognition in Spanish.

These number coloring pages will make great activity to use as part of math centers.

There are six number printables in this kit and each will work on a different set of numbers. Here are the numbers included on each sheet:

CINCO DE MAYO COLOR BY NUMBER IN SPANISH: Color word recognition

Unlike in my St. Patrick’s Day color by number pages in Spanish where the color code is represented by a crayon, these Cinco de Mayo color by number worksheets are a little bit trickier.

Instead of the crayon, it has the color word in Spanish.

Why?

This will help your little ones begin to recognize and practice colors in Spanish.

If your littles are new to learning the color words in Spanish, I recommend printing off a copy of my color flashcards in Spanish.

You can review it with your students beforehand. For more help, you can hang or put them near your students as a guide when completing these color by number worksheets in Spanish.

While working on their color by number worksheets, they can identify the color word by browsing through the set of color flashcards.

CINCO DE MAYO COLOR BY NUMBER IN SPANISH: FINE MOTOR

Not only will your littles learn math by working on number recognition in Spanish, but these worksheets are also a great way to get children to strengthen their fine motor skills as they color tiny sections of the Cinco de Mayo themed mystery pictures in these pages.

They will find a variety of festive Cinco de Mayo images such as un sombrero, maracas, chile peppers, chips and salsa and more!

What art supplies should you use?

We like to use a variety of art supplies when working with our color by code worksheets.

Our go to is markers, but when we really want to get in the coloring zone, I will whip out the watercolor paints and we will go to town.

Watch as through each different art supply, your children use a different muscle in their little hands.

Along with math and fine motor skills, this free printable Cinco de Mayo color by number in Spanish will be a great mindfulness activity for your child as they do some independent work to color in the dinosaur picture.

It will also work on your student’s comprehension as they go through and figure out which color goes with each number.

Watch as your child tunes in with learning the different numbers and selects the correct color and colors away on these Cinco de Mayo color by number worksheets in Spanish.

HOW TO USE THESE FREE PRINTABLE COLOR BY NUMBER CINCO DE MAYO PAGES IN YOUR CLASSROOM

I recommend downloading and printing off several copies of the color by number activity for each student.

Start by introducing the color flashcards to your students, or by writing the basic Spanish color words on the board.

Then, work through one worksheet at a time and together as a group. Go through and identify the different Spanish numbers on the sheet.

Together go through and quietly fill in the correct colors. Let’s see if everyone’s color on the number sheets look the same!

Once your students get the hang of how the activity works, you can then hand out different sheets to the students and let them try the activity in small groups or individually.

Go around the room and encourage the students to keep conversations and practice all in Spanish to get the minority language flowing.

There are so many benefits of doing word searches with your children. In her post “The Benefits of Word searches” Lisa from Gifted Guru mentions the many benefits of using word search puzzles in your classroom.

I want to list a few of those benefits below.

Helps with word recognition

I enjoy making thematic word search printables because they aid children in word recognition. If they know the theme is winter, then that will help them tell the difference and learn to recognize new winter vocabulary in Spanish

Develop pattern recognition

This is important with learning Spanish spelling and phonetics. It helps recognize which letters follow which.

Introduce new vocabulary

This is super important when learning a foreign language. This is one of the reasons I plan to create a seasonal word search for every season. It helps children with building vocabulary in Spanish.

Spelling

Spelling is slightly different in Spanish than English since Spanish is a phonetic language.

Word searches help the user discover the patterns of spelling in Spanish as they look for each word in the word search.

Word searches are fun

Naturally, the most important way to learn is through having fun and I don’t know about you, but I always enjoyed myself a good word find game growing up.

Cinco de Mayo is the holiday and celebration that commemorates a battle fought in Puebla Mexico on the fifth of May, 1862. This battle resulted in the unexpected victory for the Mexican army over French forces.

Now, the people of Puebla, Mexico observe the holiday to celebrate its victory. In the United States, Americans have adopted this holiday to celebrate the honor of the battle as well as Mexican culture.
