Lennox is entering his last half-year of preschool before he heads off into kindergarten.

That means I only have a handful of months left to provide him with as much minority language use as I can, and I want to do this by teaching him the foundations of reading and writing in Spanish.

That’s why this month, I will be publishing a series of posts to help your child begin reading and writing in Spanish based on resources that I have found and what has worked for Lennox and me at home.

I will kick this series off with today’s post, a compilation of children’s picture books in Spanish to learn about the Spanish alphabet.

Then, I will make some printables and share some activities to help your child learn their letters and share some resources to embark on your child’s reading and writing journey in Spanish! Stay tuned!

This nursery rhyme in Spanish is such a catchy tune, you will find yourself singing it all day long, and that’s the point, right?

Repetitive words and rhymes is one of the best ways that children learn a language.

In her article, “Spanish Syllable Segmentation in Bilingual Reading”, Barbara Mascarano from Spanish4kiddos says the following about the benefits of nursery rhymes for bilingual children:

• “Aside from literacy integration, nursery rhymes develop new ways to learn words and phrases.”
• “Similarly, using nursery rhymes with other activities boost language skills and memorization in young children.”

That’s why today, I am sharing a set of free flashcards with essential vocabulary in the nursery rhyme Los pollitos dicen, as well as five free printable lyrics and coloring pages to engage your children’s knowledge of the nursery rhyme.

My son Lennox loved these free printable lyrics and activities, which is a first because he usually gets frustrated when I test some of my letter printable activities or seasonal activities in Spanish with him! He’s too busy to slow down for printables—#boys.

Ways to use the “Los pollitos dicen” nursery rhyme flashcards.

• First, familiarize your child with the vocabulary using the free printable flashcards. Below are some fun ways you can use the flashcards:
• One of my favorite activities is to print off two sets and use them as a memory game. This is great for younger children to practice language and memorization skills as they can relate the word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it!
• Another fun activity is sorting. These spring flashcards you could sort by animals/insects, weather, and clothing objects/ accessories.

• You could also play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. Shuffle the flashcards, then lift a flashcard up and show your child. If they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
• You could play a bilingual game, and say the version in English and your child repeat it in Spanish and vice versa.
• You could place the flashcards face up on a table. Say a word on the list and see how fast your child can recognize the word.
• Play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have them flip the cards over until they find the correct card.
• Lastly, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child match the words and images with their correct halves.

2. Listen to the “Los pollitos dicen” YouTube videos.

 Below are four high-quality YouTube videos that sing Los pollitos dicen. 

Let your child listen and learn the melody and lyrics. Listening to repetitive words, especially words that rhyme, is so helpful when learning a second language!

Next, you can use the “los pollitos dicen” flashcards along with the YouTube videos in the following ways:

• When listening to a YouTube video, ask your child to hold up a specific flashcard whenever they hear the word in the song! Doing this will familiarize your child with the orthography of the word, as well as the pronunciation.
• Once they get the hang of using one flashcard, throw in two, or maybe three!
• Then, you can ask them to order the flashcards by the order they appear in the song!

 This activity will be a fun way to learn Spanish and prepare your child to read and write as well!

What are sight words?

“Sight words are the building blocks of the literacy instruction.” – Weareteachers.com

Sight words are simple, common words taught to kids to be memorized and eventually recognized within three-seconds.

Memorizing sight words help kids become faster and more fluent readers.

In the English language, practicing sight words and doing sight word activities are extremely helpful due to English’s non-phonetic nature. Non-phonetic means the pronunciation of a word does not correspond to its’ spelling.

Many sight words in English include words that do not fit phonetic patterns, i.e., of, through, through, etc. 

On the other hand, Spanish is a phonetic language, and despite a few rules, each letter has one sound. This means that there is a heavier focus on phonetics-based learning over word memorization when it comes to teaching children how to read.

Phonetics-based learning works on breaking down the different letters and syllables of words.

I will go more into this in a future post.

What are high-frequency words?

High-frequency words are the most commonly found words.

Sight words and high-frequency words share similar concepts and are often used interchangeably, though they are not the same. 

Sight words are words that can be quickly read by sight. These are words that are memorized and, many of which do not fit a phonetic pattern. 

High-frequency words are the MOST COMMON words found in texts. When children study high-frequency words and recognize them immediately, they turn them into sight words.

Tina, from Primary Delight Teaching goes more into how to turn high-frequency words into sight words here. 

I do not remember doing sight word practice as a child. As a more right-brained thinker, I most definitely would have benefited from repetitive and memorization activities such as sight word activities.

Memorization and repetitive activities are how I learned Spanish and two other languages as an adult.

That is why, even though Spanish literacy takes a phonetic-based approach, I think that it would be beneficial to implement high-frequency word activities to guide children in their Spanish literacy journey.

I plan on executing some of these activities with my son Lennox over the next couple of months to see, and if these activities prove useful, I want to share them with you!

In the meantime, keep reading to see a list of ways you can use high-frequency words in the classroom or at home. 

Ways to use high-frequency words in the Spanish classroom or at home

• Reading: The only way to become a better reader is through reading. Reading exposes children to new high-frequency words as well as new vocabulary. Allocate a slot of time in each day to read to your child.

• Word of the day: Each time you read a book, scan through the book first to see if a particular high-frequency word frequently appears. Practice that word a few times with your child or student and have them locate the word with their finger when it comes up in the book.

• Songs– pick a nursery rhyme or children’s song and practice it throughout the week. Once your child becomes familiar with the song, give them a piece of paper with a particular high-frequency word and have them raise it in the air when they hear the sight word in the song.

  You could also print out the lyrics to the song and have your child circle or highlight the high-frequency word as well. 

• Poetry: Poems use a lot of high-frequency words. Print out a poem in Spanish with your child and have them circle the high-frequency word of the day! You might even learn some new vocabulary yourself =)
• Scavenger hunts:

1. Choose a certain amount of sight words and hide them around the house or classroom.
2. For some advanced extra fun, throw in a couple of words that are not on the list.
3. See how many words your child can find that are on the list!

• I-Spy – write a couple of words on a paper, and see if your child can identify the high-frequency word of the day! 
• Manipulative activities– using any concrete objects, blocks, shapes, cookie cutters, etc., have your kids explore letters with a hands-on approach.

Genuine, interactive exposure is what will ignite your child’s curiosity and desire to learn. Today I am going to share 20 YouTube videos in Spanish for kids that will help supplement your child’s Spanish. 

My partner and I are raising bilingual our son Lennox in Spanish using the minority language at home approach. 

In my post, how I teach my toddler Spanish, I mention seven techniques that have helped me raise him in Spanish as a nonnative seaker. One of those techniques is through YouTube channels in Spanish for kids.

Although we use YouTube on occasion, I limit its use. Why?

For starters, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend television for children under two. Most importantly, television is not a good language teacher for young children who require interactive language input to become passive bilinguals..

Nevertheless, YouTube and television can be a great SUPPLEMENT to language acquisition, especially through catchy, repetitive songs and animations.

Today, I want to share a list of 20 popular YouTube channels in Spanish with which you can SUPPLEMENT your child’s Spanish.

These channels are made for children up to age five. However, from personal experience, I can tell you that they are entertaining for older children as well.

When Lennox first started watching them, I used to go around the house singing the catchy tunes.

YouTube Channels in Spanish for Kids

1. El reino infantil – Great for ALL ages!

This YouTube channel is by far our household favorite!

El reino infantill is brought to you by Argentine Roberto Pumpar Kuky. It is the number 1 Spanish YouTube Channel for Kids in Latin American, and number three worldwide. It has even surpassed channels such as Disney, Nickelodeon, and The Cartoon Network!

We love this channel for its originality, catchy tunes, and dynamic animations.

These short songs for kids in Spanish, which cover music from cumbia to merengue, make you want to get up and dance.

Even after 16+ years of studying Spanish, I cannot begin to express how much vocabulary I have learned watching these videos side-by-side with Lennox.

Another cool fact about El reino infantil is that you can find the songs on apple music!!

Here are two of my favorite tunes from El reino infantil:

• La mancha loca– learn about a silly stain that jumps all over the place with this catchy tune!
• Cuidando con la bomba chita– Move your hips to the merengue to avoid getting hit by the ‘wittle bomb.’

2. Toy Cantando

Toy Cantando is the largest Colombian YouTube Channel. It is best known for its animated children’s song “La vaca lola.” Today, Toy Cantando is one of the biggest content creators in Latin America.

I highly agree with Toy Cantando’s philosophy of “educating while having fun!”

3. Plim Plim

Plim Plim is an Argentine series of children’s folk songs that began in 2011. The series revolves around Plim Plim’s adventures, a child who has combined features of a clown, hero, and magician.

4. El Mono Sílabo

El Mono Sílabo is a Mexican YouTube channel that aids children in reading and writing in Spanish. The two main characters are El Mono Sílabo and Nícola Cavernícola. Through anecdotes and songs, children will learn all about syllables, reading, and writing!

5. A Tiempo Preescolar

 A Tiempo Preescolar is a Chilean YouTube channel that is perfect for preschoolers. The main character is el perro Chocolo.

6. Cleo y Cuquin

Cleo y Cuquin is a Mexican YouTube Channel that follows an 8-year-old girl Cleo and her brother Cuquin. They form part of the Telerín family.

La familia Telerín was originally created. In 1964 in Spain under La Televisión Española. It left such an impact on Spain and Latin America, that Cleo y Cuquin brought it back in 3D!

7. Kids Tv Español Latino

Another great Mexican YouTube channel that is great for preschoolers!

Lennox loves their Bob El Tren series!

8. Pica-Pica

Pica-Pica is a Spanish group of musicians and children’s theatre that has a gained popularity among children for their entertaining spectacles and songs!

9. Cantoalegre TV

Cantoalege, a children’s music production, was founded in Medillín, Colombia, in 1984. Today it has branched off into Cantoalegre TV, a popular YouTube channel with over 100k subscribers that produces audiovisual content for kids.

10. Semillitas TV 

Semillitas TV belongs to SOMOS TV, an American company dedicated to servicing the Latino market.  

This channel offers children’s animation that is perfect from babies up to the preschool years.

11. Pocoyo en Español

Pocoyo is a Spanish-British Coproduction. It follows the main character, 4-year-old Pocoyo, on all of his adventures. Children will be encouraged to recognize situations that Pocoyo is in or scenarios going on around him.

12. Cartoon Studio

Another popular YouTube channel that has children’s songs in Spanish. Cartoon Studio also has children’s music to help children relax and sleep.

14. Super Simple Español

A very popular YouTube channel that offers catchy nursery rhymes for children.

15. Biper y sus amigos

A series of children’s songs with a strong religious influence.

16. BabyFirst Español

A YouTube channel that offers a collection of songs great for babies and toddlers!

An Argentine Youtube channel with children’s songs for ages 1-4

5. Un Día Salvaje en el Zoológico

Ages 3-8

Un Día Salvaje en el Zoológico is the perfect zoo book for multicultural families. Follow the polyglot siblings Dylan and Isabella, and their pet chicken, Kiki, through their adventurous day at the zoo. What will happen when Kiki, the chicken, gets left unattended? You will have to find out!

Learn Spanish with Un Día Salvaje en el Zoológico and learn six new words in different languages through the polyglot siblings!

This book is a bit more advanced, and I would recommend it for elementary school-aged children, but as I do with Lennox with many books we have, I paraphrase and invite him to tell his version of the story. You can check out other ways I read to Lennox in the minority language here.

6. Un zoológico en casa

In our household, we only speak our minority language, Spanish at home!

As a nonnative speaker of Spanish myself, book are super helpful when it comes to explaining things I might just not be able to explain to my son in our target language.

We have tons of books that were given to us in English. I try my best to translate them on the spot or make something up as we read along with the pages. Needless to say, this gets very exhausting.

That’s why I prefer to read to my son using our small, but growing, book collection in Spanish as much as I can. It helps me practice my Spanish, and I don’t have to force a translation.

I wanted to share some of our favorite books in Spanish because not only is it beneficial for your child to practice another language at such a young age, but it is also extremely beneficial for you, mom, dad or caretaker, as you can learn right alongside them.

1.    Primeras Cien Palabras

My First 100 Words

Lennox was given this books at his baby shower, and it grew to be one of his favorites from when he was a few months old. He still enjoys bringing it out, and he points out all of the items in Spanish. His favorites are carro and pato.

Sometimes I gather household items and/or toys that relate to the items in the book and we play a matching game with the images found in the book.

One of my favorite things about this book is that it doesn’t require much reading, but rather exploring. It’s also bilingual, so it’s an excellent resource for parents who also wan to learn Spanish.

Hands down, the two best ways I have learned Spanish over the years is through children’s books in Spanish and Latin music. You’ve got this!!

2.  ¿Eres mi mamá? 

Are You My Mother?

Who didn’t love this book growing up? I know I did, and now as a mama myself, I relearned it in a new language!

This version found on Amazon is perfect for babies and toddlers. It is a shortened version with a board hardcover. It is also smaller so your baby or toddler can carry it comfortable in their own hands.

Once your child gets older, you can grab the bilingual edition recommended for children ages 6-9.

3.   Dios te bendiga y buenas noches

Translation: God Bless You and Goodnight.

I would have to say this is Lennox’s favorite book. The pictures are so vibrant, and the words have a beautiful rhyme.

I haven’t come across many Spanish books with a good rhyme, but this one is perfect. We even made a bedtime song out the words. Maybe one day I’ll embarrass myself and publish a YouTube video of us performing it. ha!

4. ¡ Qué cosas dice mi abuela!

Translation: Things That My Grandma Says

This book reminds me so much of Lennox’s abuela and all of her beautiful wisdom. It’s about what Abuela says and offers popular idioms in Spanish.

One of my favorite idioms is, “—El hablar bien poco cuesta. Tan importante es saber hablar como saber callar y escuchar.” My translation: —Talking is easy. Talking is important, but even more important is knowing how to be quiet and listen”.

The pictures are also very eye-catching and entertain Lennox’s attention span for quite a bit of time.

This book is a little more advanced. I would say more for preschool or even elementary school, but if you have a younger child, you could paraphrase what is being said, or make up a story of your own!

5. La oruga muy hambrienta

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I unfortunately bought this version in English before I realized there was a Spanish version, and I don’t see the point of having two; however, I am sure it is just as great of a read in Spanish.

One of our favorite ways to read this book is to point out the oruguita .

Then, as we flip through each page and I sing to Lennox “¿Dónde está la oruguita?”

He responds by saying in his adorable toddler voice “ahí tá “ (There it is).”

6. Siempre te querré

Love You Forever

This book was one of my childhood favorites. I remember laughing at the little boy for unrolling the toilet paper, and now Lennox does the same. It is such a sweet story.

I turned the repetitive phrase in the book into a song that I sing to Lennox everynight before I kiss him and send him off into dreamland. 

“Para siempre te amaré, 
Para siempre te querré,
Mientras en mi haya vida, 
Siempre serás mi bebé”

“I’ll love you forever, 
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living, 
My baby you’ll be”

7.  La pequeña locomotor que sí pudo

The Little Engine That Could

Lennox is obsessed with carros and choo choos right now. On our last trip to Barnes & Nobles, he picked out this boo. Does it look familiar? The Little Engine That Could. You were right!! Pat on the back!  

I think I can, or pensé que sí podia, pensé que sí podía. Yes, you can! You can read to your child in Spanish. It will be an educational and bonding time for you and your baby!!
