Why a Spanish alphabet printable?

This Spanish alphabet printable will make a great addition to your classroom.

It will create a print-rich environment and serve as a great reference point for visual learners to use when learning their letters.

I originally created this Spanish alphabet printable for my son to use at home because he struggles with letters. He doesn’t like to sit still for long periods of time to learn letters and gets frustrated with worksheets.

That’s why I try to create engaging activities and games, like an ABC bingo to help him practice letters and make them stick.

This visual Spanish alphabet printable has encouraged his letter memorization as he connects the letter to the animal words that begin with each letter.

First, let’s learn a little bit more about the Spanish alphabet and this printable below.

The Spanish Alphabet

The Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, that’s one more letter than the letters of the English alphabet, thanks to the ñ.

Now you might be wondering, “what about ch, and ll, I definitely learned those in Spanish 101?”

Well, yes, you might have, but the Real Academia Española declared that ch and ll are no longer part of the Spanish alphabet because in all reality, they are actually digraphs, two letters that combine together to correspond to one sound.

Therefore, the current Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters.

Below are the pronunciation of the different sounds in Spanish alphabet.

Learn the Spanish alphabet with these printable Spanish alphabet flashcards

However, since I have been researching a bit more about reading and writing readiness for kids in Spanish, I realized I was doing things a bit wrong. 

While letter recognition is necessary for learning to read and write, it is not required to recognize all of the letter before moving on to syllables.

Most workbooks begin teaching children vowels and then work with the consonants (starting with the most commonly used consonants first) concurrently with the vowels.

With that said, before I continue making these letter printables in Spanish in alphabetical order, let me get the vowels out!

What comes in this letter O printables in Spanish kit?

You will receive a fun, four-page printable workbook for your child to practice the letter O in Spanish.

Page 1 is a practice writing an uppercase and lowercase letter O. O es de oso, a fun word starting with the letter O that just might become one of your child’s first words they learn how to read!

At the top of this page is a list of all of the vowels recognition for your children to look at with a focus on the letter O!

Page 2 is a counting and writing page. 

Ask your child to count they number of osos on the page.

Then, have them write the correct number (4) of bears in the allocated spot. If they don’t know how to write their numbers yet, don’t push it! 

Simply guide them and let them see how you write the letter 4! 

*Remember, letters and numbers are super intimidating! Pressuring or hurrying your child might discourage them from working with letters at all. So be gentle and patient.

Once your child has counted how many osos, have them write an O for each oso, so four letter Os! If they need more practice, allow them to retrace the Os on the first page.

Lastly, if you child has more attention span then mine, they might enjoy coloring the cuatro ositos.

Page 3 is a O in action page.

On this page, you will find three Spanish verbs that start with the letter O, oler, oír, and observar. 

Now, it might be too soon to talk about what a verb is, but you can talk about the act of seeing, hearing, and smelling. 

Next, ask your child to tell you what she hears. Then, write it down. Then, ask your child what she sees and what she smells again.

 Always write down her answers slowly so she can see you write. Children learn a lot just through Observing adults!

Lastly, page 4 is a fine motor, counting and letter O recognition worksheet.

First, read the sentence at the top of the page with your child.

Did they understand the sentence, if not talk about words they might not know and help them comprehend the short text.

Next, have them circle all of the Os in the sentence.

Once they have found all of the Os in the sentence, have them count the number of Os there are (there are 8) and help them write the number on the line.

Now they they understand the text, found all of the Os and counted them, your child is ready to carry out the task of getting the Osito to the olla de miel.

In my past few posts, I have shared a handful of resources that will prepare your child to set sail on their literacy journey in Spanish such as these ABC book recommendations, Spanish reading readiness resources, and more!

Regardless of whether you are teaching your child to read in Spanish, English, or any other language, any emergent reader must be able to identify and pronounce the letters.

Learning the letters is NOT an easy task for preschoolers, not easy at all. In fact, it can be highly intimidating. That’s why I believe children should not learn the letters in the traditional workbook kind of way (don’t get me wrong, these can help), but rather through a play-based approach.

FREE ABC Printable Flashcards in Spanish

• Use these Spanish flashcards in a variety of fun and creative ways to memorize the alphabet! My favorite way to use them is as an energy buster : Place the flashcards on the opposite side of the room and call out a letter. Have your child run and find the letter as quickly as possible. More points if they can draw the letter after!

What do you need for this Don’t Break the Ice Letter Smash game?

For this game you need very few materials, you might already even have them at home!

• Break the Ice game
• Dry-Erase Marker
• Alphabet flashcards
  For the alphabet flashcards you an either make your own, or you can use my free printable ABC flashcards that are in Spanish, but you can simply remove the Ñ for the English alphabet!

How to set up this game

To set up this game, prepare your Break the Ice game by inserting all of the ice pieces into the frame.

Next, once you have placed all of the ice pieces into the frame, take your Dry-Erase Marker and, in a random order, write the alphabet on the pieces. Make sure not to write any letter on the center piece (the piece with four ice cubes together) where the penguin will sit. That will defeat the game’s purpose because you don’t want the penguin to fall!

*Note: not all of the ice pieces will have a letter, and that’s okay. You do not need to fill all of the ice pieces with a letter. 

Then, take your ABC flashcards and put them face down on the floor. 

You are all set up. Time to play! 

How to play this Don’t Break the Ice letter smash game

With your ABC flashcards face down, have your child pick up a flashcard. Help them identify the letter of the alphabet they chose. Then, talk about the letter, its shape, sound, and what makes it unique. 

Next, see if your child can identify the letter on the ice rink. If they cannot the first few times, help them. You will see how empowered they will become to find the letter independently. 

Once they find the letter, have them break that letter out of the ice. Make sure your child knows that the game’s goal is to keep the center piece of ice with the penguin intact.

Keep playing until the penguin falls!

Once the penguin falls, put the game together again and play repeatedly.

Another way to play this game is to break the ice in alphabetical order. Doing this will help your child learn their ABCs in order. It will also change the dynamic of each game too as the ice cubes will be set up differently for each game!

How far into the alphabet can you get before the penguin falls?

Through this playful repetition in either version of the game, your child should learn the alphabet in no time!

I also created some FREE alphabet flashcards in Spanish for you to learn the alphabet in various ways. One of those ways is through this interactive ABC Bingo!

Today, I want to share some Spanish reading resources and tips with you to help your emergent reader start connecting the dots of the print world to form syllables and send them on their way to start reading their first words!

Ahh, so exciting!

I have been head deep into research, but today I will share my favorite reading resources in Spanish with you.

Prepare your child for the world of print.

All children become emergent readers once they start connecting the dots and understanding that those weird shapes in books form words that have meanings. 

We parents must guide our children into a love for reading, and there are several things we can do to help them.

Below are some tips I recommend for emerging readers. 

• Read often to your children, so they fall in love with reading. 
  
  Even if you have a younger toddler who can’t seem to sit through even the first page of a book (trust me, I am familiar with this setting), do not be discouraged. Keep on reading.
  
  This was Lennox not too long ago. Now he is 4.5, and he is obsessed with books. Books at bed, books at bath, books, books, books!
  
• When you read to your child, talk to them about the different parts of the books. The title, the author, the introduction etc. This will help them understand that the letters they see written have a meaning. And so do the words in the book!
• When reading, model finger-point reading so your child can learn how we read.
• Encourage pretend reading. Ask your child to tell you what is happening in the book.
• Create a space to read to your child.
  We keep our books in little baskets all throughout the house. The baskets we use the most are right beside our bed for bedtime stories, and right outside Lennox’s bathroom for bath time stories! This allows us to keep out books in a rotation so that they all get some love!

Once your child starts to show more interest in reading, you know you are ready to move on to the next steps; learning about letters and syllables!

Below I’ll share some resources to help your child on their reading journey!

Books to Learn the ABCs in Spanish

Before your child starts learning how to read, the first step is to learn the Spanish alphabet.

Now, learning 27 complicated shapes is very intimidating for young children, so learning the alphabet needs to be done in an engaging manner to encourage the learning process. 

I will share a round-up of play-based ways to learn the alphabet in my next post. The majority of these posts that I will shared by other kid bloggers are intended for the English alphabet, but likewise, you will be able to apply them to the Spanish alphabet in your unique way. So stay tuned.

Furthermore, to begin learning the ABCs, check out these picture books in Spanish to learn the ABCs.

When you begin teaching the letters to your children, start with the vowels—A, E, I, O, U. They are the most important letters of the Spanish alphabet. Your child can learn the rest of the letters around the vowels.

YouTube Literacy videos in Spanish for kids

There are so many amazing and FREE resources on YouTube that you can use to help your children learn to read. Learn about two of my favorites below.

• Monosílabo

Monosílabo is such a great resource to have at home. It is a monkey puppet and his accomplice, Nicolo Cavernícalo.

Together, they will teach your child the ABCs, vowels, and consonants in a fun and entertaining way that will stick!

When we wake up and prepare for the day, I put monosílabo on for Lennox for 15-20 minutes. Each day I put a different letter on, and we talk about that same letter throughout the day!

The video below works on the letter P, one of the first recommended consonants to teach.

• Aprender a Leer is another great YouTube resource to help teach your kids the Spanish syllables.

There are many more resources that you can find on YouTube, from animations to bloggers, that can help you teach your child to read. All you have to do is BUSCAR!

Spanish Reading Readiness Workbooks

Once your child has a solid foundation of their letters, most importantly the vowels, you can start using a beginning reader workbook.

Throughout my research, I have come across quite a selection that I will share with you, starting with the books that I have physically at home.

Coco is a great literacy workbook for emergent readers in Spanish. It utilizes the method of “Reading by Words” to train children to recognize some of the most common words in the Spanish language.

This book is an ideal resource for children ages 5-7 who are ready to embark on their reading journey.

It is broken down into 7 sections and 54 sequential lessons with colored themes and captivating visuals. Below are the seven sections Coquito covers:

1. Vocales– This section works the five vowels A, E, I, O, U
2. Sílabas directas – direct syllables which, are the most commonly found consonants followed by a vowel.

   This book begins with M and P since they are the the first sounds formed mamá and papá.
   PA / PE / PI / PO / PU
   
   With each new direct syllable formed, there is an activity for the child to work on afterward. Also, at the end of each section there is an evaluation activity for the child to do, too.
3. Sílabas inversas y mixtas
   Inverse syllables are when the vowel comes before a consonant. AS / ES/ IS / OS/ US.
   Mixed Syllables are when there is a mixture of direct and inverse syllables.
4. Sílabas dipotongadas– Diphthong when two vowels form one syllable, for example–> hielo, pronounces. (yeh-lo).
5. Sílabas trabajadas– When two consonats are found in one syllable, for expample, planeta [pla] [ne] [ta].
6. Sílabas complejas– four letters (usually one vowel and three consonants) that make up one syllable. Some examples are: tres, then gris.
7. The last section is an activity section that children can work on reading comprehension through short stories.

Nuevo Silabario Hispano Americano

Next we have the Nuevo Silabario Hispano Americano. I bought this book because my partner, Carlos, swears by it! This book is popular throughout Latin America, especially in Central America. 

You might have used this book growing up!

This book was written in 1948 by Argentine pedagogist Adrián Dufflocq Galdames.

El silabario takes a phonetic approach to learning how to read. Here is a quote from the introduction. 

“Las únicas letras que pueden nombrarse por separado son las vocales (a, e, i, o u), porque sus nombres son sonidos (y los sonidos nombres) ; en cambio las 24 letras restantes son todas mudas y, por lo tanto, no pueden pronunciarse solas.”

My translation; The only letters with their own names are the vowels (a, e, I, o, u) because their names are sounds ( and the sounds, names); whereas the other 24 letters are all mute and therefore cannot be pronounced alone. 

The author argues that the children do not need to learn the sound of the individual letters (except for the vowels) but rather be able to recognize their forms. 

And with that introduction, the book throws us right into the consonant P and its sounds with the five vowels. 

Nacho: Libro Inicial de Lectura

I do not own this workbook, but throughout my research I found this book which is another popular reading workbook throughout Latin America.

This book was printed in Colombia and is for children ages 4-13 who are learning how to read.

It is the first book of a series and helps children learn how to read and write by learning syllable combinations.

This book also has colorful and vibrant images to help differentiate between the different syllables.

Furthermore, each page has a practice reading and writing section at the bottom for the children to be able to execute their newly learned skills.

La pata pita

We just received our copy of La pata pita in the mail today and it is awesome!

It starts out with introduction to all the vowels, and then jumps right into the most commonly used consonants!

It also includes activities to use with your child too!

This is the first book in a series. The second book is called La pata pita vuelve

Nuestra Cartilla Fonetica Puerto Rico

Here is another reading workbook resource used in Puerto Rico! Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to get my hands on this workbook, but it has five stars, so it must get the job done for those who use it!

Below I am going to share a selection of books that a great for beginner readers.

• Books in Spanish by Mo Willems

Mo Willems books are PERFECT for beginner readers. His books have big print, short sentences and simple vocabulary that will encourage your child to finish the entire book.

• National Geographic Readers Series

National Geographic has a little reader series on different topics such as animals, nature, dinosaurs, and more!

They have different levels, too, so your child can grow as their reading improves.

I am super excited to buy ALL of these books over time, not only for Lennox to practice reading but also to enhance my Spanish vocabulary! Lennox has always been super curious about the world, and sometimes it is hard for me to respond in my nonnative minority language, so these will definitely help!

• English-Spanish First Little Readers

This pack comes with 25 Spanish<> English bilingual beginner reader books. They have simple, predictable story with lots of high frequency words!

Looking to solidify your child’s Spanish literacy even more?

What do you need for this ABC bingo in Spanish?

For this printable activity, you will need:

• 8.5 x 11 printer paper or card stock
• A printer
• Bingo chips or something to mark bingo with such as pebbles or rocks. Legos even work too!

How to Play this ABC Bingo game in Spanish?

This game is super straightforward to play!

Once you print off your ABC vocabulary cards and bingo sheets, I recommend laminating them so you can save them for future use!

Then, cut out the laminated cards.

Once the winter vocabulary cards are cut out, place the cards face down in a pile or in random order.

Give each player a bingo sheet.

Then in order (youngest to oldest/ clockwise/ however you choose) pick up a card from the pile. Have the person picking up the card and repeating which letter they have in Spanish for everyone to hear!

Lastly, all players with the selected vocabulary card on their bingo sheet, should mark it with a bingo chip.

The first player to fill their card wins!

How many letters are in the Spanish Alphabet?

The Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, that’s one more letter than in the English alphabet, thanks to the ñ.

Now you might be wondering, “what about ch, and ll, I definitely learned those in Spanish 101?”

Well, yes, you might have, but the Real Academia Española declared that ch and ll are no longer part of the Spanish alphabet because in all reality, they are actually digraphs, two letters that combine together to correspond to one sound.

Therefore, the contemporary Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters.

Children learn best through play especially when it comes to retaining language! 

We try to keep it fun and playful at home when working on anything as complicated as the alphabet. So to begin learning about letters, we have done fun activities such as salt letter writing trays, and sensory slime to construct the alphabet letters.

Learn the ABCs in Spanish through books

Books are my next best resource when using our minority language at home. Raising my son in my nonnative language can present difficulties sometimes as my Spanish vocabulary is not as extensive as my English vocabulary. However, through books, I can teach my son new vocabulary while learning new words myself!

Last week, I published a post on 23 ABC books in Spanish for preschoolers. I own some of these myself, and I highly recommend El abecedario de emociones. This book is more directed at older preschoolers, but even younger and older children will enjoy it. For each Spanish letter in the alphabet, the book offers an emotion, and along with that emotion, it includes a beautiful poem.

Learn the ABCs in Spanish through my FREE ABC worksheets for preschoolers

Yup, that’s right, free ABC worksheets! Woohoo, but wait! Before you get too excited, this has been one of those projects that is taking me years. I am up to the letter J, and I hope that this learning to read and write in Spanish series can help me push out the rest of those letter worksheets.

There are so many different YouTube videos in Spanish that are catchy for kids to listen to at home. Check out an educational video below of the ABCs which will get your children singing the Spanish alphabet.

Learn the Spanish alphabet with these Printable A to Z Alphabet flash cards in Spanish

How can you use these ABC flashcards in Spanish to help your students with letter recognition? Below are a few fun ways:

• A great way to use these alphabet flashcards is by playing a memory game. Match the letras mayúsculas (capital letters) to the corresponding letra minúscula (lowercase letters). See who can get the most matches!
• Have your young children line up the ABCs in the correct order. Sing the ABC song repeatedly to get the letters to stick!
• Laminate your ABC flashcards, add a magnet to the back, and put them on the fridge. Using these flashcards as magnets will create a print-rich environment, and who doesn’t love magnets!
• Play a game of alphabet Go Fish!
• Create a word wall and place all of the letters on it. Have your child or student grab a letter and repeat it in Spanish. Once they get familiar with their letters, they can start finding simple words that start with that letter.  
• When working with new themes or words, write a word on a dry-erase board or piece of paper and have your child form the word with the flashcards. You could also take your words from this list of high-frequency words in Spanish.
• Use them in this game of Don’t Break The Ice Letter Smash: A Creative Way To Learn The ABCs
• Go on an ABC scavenger hunt. Have your child draw a letter from the flashcards. Go for a walk around the house and see if your child can spot an object with their letter on it.
• Use them as an energy buster! Place the flashcards on the opposite side of the room and call out a letter. Have your child run and find the letter as quickly as possible. More points if they can draw the letter after!
• Another great way to use these flashcards is to play Slapjack by placing all of th
• e flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct letter.
• Create a writing inspiration center by placing the cards in the center. Have your student pick a letter and write basic words that start with that letter.  
• Play I-Spy. Hide the letters around the room and see if your child can find all the letters. 
• Kids love bingo games! Play a game of Alphabet bingo in Spanish with this printable game with bingo alphabet sheets.

Lennox is entering his last half-year of preschool before he heads off into kindergarten.

That means I only have a handful of months left to provide him with as much minority language use as I can, and I want to do this by teaching him the foundations of reading and writing in Spanish.

That’s why this month, I will be publishing a series of posts to help your child begin reading and writing in Spanish based on resources that I have found and what has worked for Lennox and me at home.

I will kick this series off with today’s post, a compilation of children’s picture books in Spanish to learn about the Spanish alphabet.

Then, I will make some printables and share some activities to help your child learn their letters and share some resources to embark on your child’s reading and writing journey in Spanish! Stay tuned!
