WHAT IS CURIO?

Curio is a curated book club for bilingual littles. Currently, it offers selections in three languages–Spanish, French and Chinese– with plans to expand its linguistic repertoire soon!

With each language option, there are two different types of book box subscriptions; the Bud Box and the Sprout Box. The Bud Box caters to newborn to four-year-olds, featuring three picture or board books alongside reading guides and audio read-alongs.

On the other hand, the Sprout Box is designed for children aged four and up. It includes three picture books, reading guides, audio read-alongs and printable activities, enriching the reading experience for older bilingual learners.

Now, let’s dive into what treasures we discovered in our Sprout Box. 

WHAT WE RECEIVED IN OUR BOOK BOX

Curio generously gifted us the Sprout Box, perfectly suited for Lennox, who is now seven years old (time flies!). Inside, we discovered three delightful books, a set of printables, and additional surprises!

Alongside each book, Curio offers a Reading Guide Plan, which outlines the story’s structure and the lessons it conveys. This plan includes a list of important glossary words and follow-up questions. What’s more, the Reading Guide Plan is available in both English and Spanish, facilitating comprehension and engagement for bilingual learners and instructors.

Below are the three books we received in our Book Box, each with a brief introduction:

Historia de una nube

“Historia de una nube” by Eleonora Garriga, illustrated by Ana Gómez, tells the tale of a little cloud embarking on a quest for answers. It ponders questions about conformity, individuality, and the notion of superiority among different ways of being.

This narrative delves deeply into the theme of diversity, emphasizing the importance of embracing differences, resisting the pressure to conform to societal norms, and promoting self-love.

Through this book, your bilingual learners will not only encounter a wealth of new vocabulary but also be introduced to the unique linguistic tone of “vos,” characteristic of Argentine Spanish.

La escalera roja 

“La escalera roja” by Fernando Pérez Hernando revolves around a charming little bird who relies on a ladder to navigate his world. When he loses his ladder and feels disheartened, he encounters a friend who reminds him that he possesses wings, rendering the ladder unnecessary.

This heartwarming tale underscores themes of friendship and courage. With its simple and repetitive sentences, it serves as excellent practice material for beginner readers.

¡Yo no fui! 

“¡Yo no fui!” by Paula Vásquez, set in Chile, follows the story of Mr. Rabbit who misplaces his glasses. Throughout the day, he diligently investigates by following different tracks to interrogate three suspects: a dog, a cat, and a squirrel. Each suspect offers an alibi, explaining their whereabouts that morning and why they don’t possess Mr. Rabbit’s glasses.

This endearing tale, with its repetitive structure, captivates bilingual children and imparts the valuable lesson of not hastily jumping to conclusions without concrete evidence.

In addition to the three books, our Curio Book Box also included some entertaining printables. Among them were a sopa de letras (word search), an I-Spy activity, and a color-by-number page, accompanied by an adorable folder to keep them organized.

As a bonus, we received a My Chinese Zodiac calendar poster, which Lennox is thrilled to hang on his wall, adding a touch of cultural curiosity to his space.

Final Thoughts

Lennox’s eyes lit up with excitement as he unwrapped the three new books from the Curio Book Box. A devoted little bookworm, he’s always on the lookout for fresh Spanish literature on the shelves of our public library. 

Among the treasures, “¡Yo no fui!” captured his attention most with its engaging storyline. His curiosity for words was piqued by the repetitive phrases, and he delighted in predicting the responses of each animal as they defended their innocence in Mr. Rabbit’s case.

We are now huge advocates of the Curio Book Box subscription. It not only saves us the hassle of scouring shelves for new Spanish books but also ensures that the selections are authentic and engaging, rather than mere translations. Then you have landed at the right place! In today’s post, I am going to share an ongoing list of 18+ fairy tales in Spanish that will get your children’s imagination churning!

In the following 18 titles, you will find popular as well as not-so-popular fairy tales, and to help you pick the right fairy tale for your child, I have separated them into three categories; books for children ages 0-2, ages 3-5 and ages 5+.

Why you should read fairy tales in Spanish to your children

I cannot reiterate enough how important reading is for bilingual children and children of all ages, but especially for bilingual children, and there is no better selection than fairy tales. 

Fairy tales are made for children. They spark imagination and offer didactic lessons that will guide children in their everyday lives. 

Fairy tales are also engaging. They have magical and whimsical elements which make reading in a second language all the more fun.

Furthermore, and as you will see throughout this post, fairy tales come from all around the globe, so they have a cultural learning component to them, too. 

Thus, if you do not have fairy tales in your home library, I suggest you stock up now!

Below I will mention 18+ fairy tales in Spanish (some are repeated for age-appropriate selections.) I will provide a brief description of each fairy tale as well as the moral that children can grasp from each fairy tale.

10. El principe rana

13. Ricitos de Oro y los tres osos

14. Caperucita roja

The Spanish version of “Little Red Riding Hood” a European fairy tale about a young girl that comes across a cunning wolf on her way to her grandmother’s house. 

The moral of the story in this cuentos de hadas is that we should never trust strangers. Even the nicest people can have bad intentions.

15. Jack y las habichuelas mágicas

This is the Spanish version of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” an English fairy tale about a poor country boy who trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans. The evans grow into a talk beanstalk that reaches the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk to find himself in the castle of a very mean giant. Find out what will happen next in this Spanish version. 

The moral of the story in Jack in the Beanstalk is to make the best of a bad situation, and when opportunity knocks, to take advantage of it.

16. El sastrecillo valiente

This book in English is known as “The Brave Little Tailor.” It is a German fairy tale about a brave little tailor that kills seven flies with one blow. He convinces the giants and kings that he is a force to be reckoned with.

17. Los tres chivitos

Los tres chivitos or “Three Billy Goats Gruff” is a Norwegian fairy tale about three male goats who need to outwit a voracious troll to get over the bridge that leads to their feeding ground.

Browse through the descriptions, and if you come across a book you think your child will enjoy, click it and then read the reviews and explore the book some more.

My five-year-old son LOVES documentaries and prefers to read about real-life facts over fictional stories. Hence, his favorite books on this list are the encyclopedias such as number 17 on this list; Antología de animales extraordinarios.

With that said, peruse through this list and find a ocean animal book in Spanish that your child will love and will most importantly, encourage Spanish language use!

Is your child dealing with anger issues? Or, do they always seem preoccupied and on edge?

Maybe they are easily moved to tears?

Well, today, I am bringing you a list of 30 + picture books in Spanish to help build emotional awareness in your child.

In this collection, I have started with books that cover different emotions.

Through these books, your child can learn the vocabulary of the different emotions in Spanish and begin to identify with each feeling through stories and tales.

Then, I will share a four subcategories of books that deal with certain feelings such as anger, fear, anxiety, and sadness.

I hope you find a selection on this list with which your child can relate.

I will regularly update this list as I find new books about emotions in Spanish on my constant journey to find the best and most authentic picture books in Spanish.

That said, let’s get feeling, but first, let me offer a brief introduction on the importance of emotional awareness in children.

What is emotional awareness, and why is it important.

Emotional awareness is a set of skills to recognize and make sense of your emotions and the emotions of others.

Emotions impact just about everything in our daily life, and it is essential to begin teaching emotions to our children from an early age, even in infancy. 

According to NAEYC.org, 

“Children with higher emotional intelligence are better able to pay attention, are more engaged in school, have more positive relationships, and are more empathic.”

There are five pillars to emotional awareness:

1. Self-Awareness: The ability to recognize our emotions.
2. Self-Regulation: The ability to control our reactions to our feelings.
3. Internal Motivation: The ability to think about and identify what’s causing us to feel the way we do.
4. Empathy: The ability to understand the emotions of other people.
5. Social Skills: Using emotional intelligence to build strong social relationships.

One way to support all five pillars of emotional awareness in the classroom and at home is through read-aloud children’s books. 

Through books, children can relate to the characters or the stories, learn new emotional vocabulary, understand their own emotions better, and develop empathy towards how others are feeling. 

That’s why I want to share this list of 30 + books about emotions in Spanish to help you begin building up the five pillars of emotional awareness with your children or students today!

Lennox is entering his last half-year of preschool before he heads off into kindergarten.

That means I only have a handful of months left to provide him with as much minority language use as I can, and I want to do this by teaching him the foundations of reading and writing in Spanish.

That’s why this month, I will be publishing a series of posts to help your child begin reading and writing in Spanish based on resources that I have found and what has worked for Lennox and me at home.

I will kick this series off with today’s post, a compilation of children’s picture books in Spanish to learn about the Spanish alphabet.

Then, I will make some printables and share some activities to help your child learn their letters and share some resources to embark on your child’s reading and writing journey in Spanish! Stay tuned!
