Ways to use these Ocean flash cards

Teachers, are you looking for fun activities and ways to use these ocean flashcards in your classroom?

If so, below I will offer a variety of ways you can use these flashcards to interact with your students in the classroom (or at home).

• Fill your book basket with some of these ocean books in Spanish. See if your child can spot any of the ocean vocabulary words in the books. 

• Create a word wall and place all of the ocean animal words on it. Have your child or student grab their favorite ocean animal and repeat it in Spanish.

• Bring out the ocean animal figurines and create an ocean sensory bin. If you don’t have animal figurines, use these laminated ocean flashcards. 
• Play a game of ocean animals Go Fish!
• The best way to memorize words is through memory games. Print off two sets and use them as a memory matching game. This activity is perfect for younger children to practice language development and memorization skills to connect the spoken word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it!
• Play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. First, shuffle the flashcards. Then, lift a flashcard and show your child. Lastly, if they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
• You could play a bilingual game and say the version in English. Have your child repeat it in Spanish and vice versa.
• Place the flash cards face up on a table and see how fast your child can recognize the ocean vocabulary.
• Another great way to use these flashcards is to play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct ocean animal vocabulary word.
• Create a writing inspiration center by placing the cards in the center. Have your student write a story about one or a few of the words. 
• For reading practice, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child use their little fingers to match the new words and images with their correct halves.

EARTH DAY COLOR BY NUMBER WORKSHEETS: MATH

Bring these fun color by number worksheets in Spanish into your preschool, pre-K or Kindergarten classrooms and get your students working on number recognition in Spanish.

This would make for a great activity during math centers for independent work!

There are six different pages in this kit and each will work on a different set of numbers. Here are the numbers included on each sheet:

Instead of the crayon, it has the color word in Spanish. 

Why? 

This will help your little with color recognition in Spanish.

If your littles are new to learning the color words in Spanish, I recommend printing off a copy of my color flashcards in Spanish.

You can review them with your students beforehand. For more help, you can hang or put them near your students as a guide when completing these color by number worksheets in Spanish.

While working on their color by number worksheets, they can identify the color word by browsing through the set of color flashcards. This will help them color in the new pictures.

If so, below I will offer a variety of ways you can use these flashcards to make language learning fun in your classroom (or home.)

• Go through these words with your students. Then pick a book or two from this selection of Space books in Spanish and see if your children can identify any of the space words in the books. 
• The best ways to memorize words is to print off two sets and use them as a memory matching game. This activity is perfect for younger children to practice language development and memorization skills to connect the spoken word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it!
• Play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. First, shuffle the flashcards. Then, lift a flashcard and show your child. Lastly, if they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
• Here is a fun Spanish game you could play with more advanced students. This game involves the Hedbanz game which is a fun family, or classroom guessing game. Use your laminated Space flashcards in Spanish and have players ask questions to the other plays to try and figure out what space vocabulary they have in their band. Below are some example sentences and questions:

• Another fun way is to play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct space vocabulary word.
• For reading practice, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child use their little fingers to match the new words and images with their correct halves.

A few months back, I created a set of 40 positive affirmations in Spanish for kids and they were such a big hit, not only in my household but with all of my awesome readers and buyers.

This bingo design is made out of beautiful watercolors.It comes with 30 Spring-themed printable bingo cards. Each card has a vocabulary word in Spanish and a picture of the meaning.

Below are some ways you can use the flashcards outside of this spring bingo game in Spanish

• Create a print rich environment by placing these around the house. Add adhesive magnets to the back of the laminated flashcards and hang them on your fridge or washer.
• Print out multiple sets and work on sequences and patterns with your preschoolers!
• One of my favorite activities is to print off two sets and use them as a memory game. This activity is perfect for younger children to practice language development and memorization skills to connect the spoken word to the image. Make sure every time you flip over a card, you say the name of what’s on it!
• You could also play a fun game by having your child stand on the opposite side of the room as you, or even better outside. First, shuffle the flashcards. Then, lift a flashcard and show your child. Lastly, if they guess it right, they can take a step or hop forward! If they mess up, a step backward! Will they make it to where you are?
• Play What’s Missing. Pick a handful of flashcards to your child. Talk about the flashcards and lay them flat on the table. Then, take a scarf and place them over the cards and remove a card. Have your child guess which card is missing.
• You could play a bilingual game and say the version in English. Have your child repeat it in Spanish and vice versa.
• You could place the flashcards face up on a table and see how fast your child can recognize the word.
• Play Slapjack by placing all of the flashcards face down on a table. Say a word on the list and have your child flip the cards over until they find the correct card.
• Lastly, you could cut the cards in half and use them as puzzles by having your child match the words and images with their correct halves.

You will also receive 10 Bingo Suertudo playing game cards to go along with the vocabulary cards. Each of the cards comes with a free space This means that you can play with up to 10 players in each game!

In each of my previous Bingos I have used a fun bilingual name name to go along with the bingo game.—Bingo enamorado, Bingo Navideño, Bingo Suertudo and my winter bingo game, Bingo Invernal.

This bingo is called Bingo en flor ( Bingo in Bloom) to go along with the blooming spring season!

Once you print off your Spring bingo cards and bingo mats, I recommend laminating them so you can save them for future use!

Then, cut out the laminated cards.

Once the spring vocabulary cards are cut out, place the cards face down in a pile or in random order.

Give each player a bingo sheet.

Then in order (youngest to oldest/ clockwise/ however you choose) pick up a card from the pile. Have the person picking up the card say what card they have in Spanish.

Lastly, all players with the selected vocabulary card on their bingo sheet, should mark it with a bingo chip.

The first player to fill their card wins!

Tips to get maximum language use from this Spring Bingo in Spanish!

• To make sure you get the absolute most language use out of this Bingo game, state the rule that the class or your family is only allowed to speak in Spanish!
• If the child flips a card and does not know the word of the image on the card, help them out with the pronunciation. Even better, before the game, flip the the cards and review the words!

Then, you can ask questions or say phrases such as:

“¿Quién tiene el ____? “

“¡Solamente mamá tiene la ______!”

“¡Wau, todos temos los ___!”

¡Qué suertudo, tu tienes el arcoiris!

Repeating phrases like this to include the vocabulary word with help the new Spanish vocabulary stick!

• Allow your child sufficient time to process the card that has been chosen, and to identify the object on their card. Try not to interject or speed up their finding process. Doing so might confuse the child or discourage participation.

What are Positive Affirmations?

Positive affirmations are brief phrases that are thought or said aloud to boost self-confidence and rid the brain of negative thoughts.

They are verbal exercises that can be practiced daily or weekly to improve the mind and rid it of negative, self-sabotaging thoughts.

Benefits of Positive Affirmations 

Positive affirmations have many benefits that might help you and your children boot those negative thoughts from the brain.

Positive Psychology states if positive affirmations are practiced consistently and repeatedly, they can have the following benefits:

• Makes us less defensive and resistant when presented with threats.
• Gives us more resilience to difficulties and builds inner strength
• Aids a more positive attitude and mindset.

While some people may be skeptical about using positive affirmations, Positive Psychology also argues that there is a psychological theory behind using positive affirmations, the self-affirmation theory. In this study, they found that “there certain neural pathways increased when people practice self-affirmation tasks.”

Daily positive affirmations might just be a great tool to add to your daily family routine.

Should you use positive affirmations with your kids?

If your child suffers from a ‘poor me’, defeatist attitude. Or, doubts themselves a lot, or both, as in my case, then positive affirmations might just be a powerful tool to use with your children today.

I recently listened to the audiobook, The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel M.D, to help me better understand my child’s pessimistic attitude.

My biggest takeaway from this book is that children’s brains are not fully developed until young adults.

This means that we as parents have to nurture their brain development and help children use their brains to full capacity.

One strategy to doing this is by helping children understand their upstairs and downstairs brains.

The “downstairs brain” includes lower regions of the brain that are reasonable for basic functions such as breathing and blinking. The downstairs brain is also responsible for impulses and emotions such as anger and fear.

On the other hand, the “upstairs brain” is reasonable for more intricate processes such as planning, making decisions, empathy, morality, and self-awareness.

Our job as parents is to help integrate the upstairs and downstairs portion of the brain. The author shares many tips on how to do this (I recommend you read or listen to the book, as I won’t listen to his suggestions here), but one of his tips that stuck out to me most was to practice mindfulness.

One tool to practice mindfulness is through positive, daily affirmations.

Through positive affirmations, your child will use the power of words to shift their negative thoughts into positive ones.

Through repetition, they will turn into your child’s inner voice and help guide them through difficulties and insecurities.

 And, turning these positive affirmations into quality family time where you can connect with your child will help boost their confidence even more and maybe yours too.

How to Use Positive Affirmations at Home

There are many ways to use positive affirmations at home. Here are some ideas you can use in your home today.

Start these affirmations with your kiddos from a young age to engrain positive thinking into your child’s everyday life.

• Make a running list of affirmations you want to use with your child. Think about what your child and struggling with. Negativity, lack of confidence, anger, etc. Then, google and jot down affirmations that will work for your child! Or, make up your own!

• There are also LOTS of websites that offer already made lists for you, or printable positive affirmations like the ones I offer below! (Keep reading to get yours today!)

• Make an affirmation board with positive beliefs, characteristics and qualities of your child. On that board, you can add goals too and new things they would like to learn from the affirmations too, like becoming a great listener and having positive thoughts.

• If you use printable affirmations (or even write your own), print them out and add a magnet. Place a different affirmation on your fridge daily or weekly! Make it a daily routine to say that affirmation aloud throughout the day! This will help change your child’s thought patterns and boost self-esteem.

• Set up different affirmations in different areas of the house. For example, my son never feels comfortable initiation an art project because ‘he doesn’t know how’, or ‘cannot do it.’ So I added our Spanish affirmation that says soy creativo, I am creative on a wall in his room, and around it, I placed all of his artwork from preschool. Every time I add a piece of art to the wall, we talk about how creative it is and how creativity does not mean perfection.

• Place an affirmation on the mirror. I dangled positive morning affirmations from the light fixture in my son’s bathroom. I will rotate the affirmation weekly.
  
  The one I have up now in Spanish says “empiezo mi día con una mente positiva,” “I start my day with a positive mindset.” When we are in front of the mirror brushing his teeth and getting ready to start the day, we repeat this phrase with a tall posture so that he can start the day off on the right foot! This has been extremely helpful with getting him to brush his teeth in the morning without whining and complaining. What a great way to start a great day!

• If you can hold a melody, turn your positive affirmations into small tunes and sing them throughout the day! This will help them stick! Young children love songs and repetition. So the next time your child is having a hard time or a bad day, sing a positive affirmation to instill happy thoughts.
